Highlights of the new student route (from 1 January 2021)

• The new immigration route will be opened in the Autumn of 2020;
• EEA nationals will come under the same criteria as applicants from the rest of the world;
• EEA nationals will be added to the list of low risk nationals (although this will be kept under review);
• Sponsorship will still look the same as now - Tier 4 licences will be rolled over and CAS will still be issued;
• There will still be English Language and academic requirements to meet, as well as financial requirements;
• The new system will use facial biometrics in its processing system so there should be no need to visit a VAC;
• *70 points will now be required to obtain a student visa: 50 will be awarded for the CAS, 10 for appropriate finances and 10 for meeting the English language requirements;*
• Switching from and into this route will be possible as long as other eligibility requirements are met;
• Applicants can apply for Entry Clearance 6 months before the course start date;
• UKVI will be removing study time limits for Postgraduate level study but caps will remain for below degree level study and Undergraduate level study;
• Academic documents will not be required to be maintained (as per Appendix D requirements) for degree level study;
• There will no longer be a requirement for applicants to provide financial documentary evidence if they have been in the UK for over one year and are applying for further Leave to Remain (although UKVI have the right to request these documents if they so desire);
• Maintenance requirements will be raised to match those of home student maintenance loan levels – e.g. £1023 a month outside of London and £1340 a month in London;
• There will be no maintenance requirements for Students’ Union Sabbatical Officers or doctors and dentists in training;
• Credibility interviews will continue but these will be scaled down to be better targeted, with better guidance available to caseworkers. Credibility interviews should only be used where there are significant concerns;
• Institutions can measure their own academic engagement but will need to provide evidence of this if requested for each student;
• There will be a reduced number of reports to be made to UKVI to help with the administrative burden of these;
• Academic engagement around the 60-day rule will continue;
• The Tier 4 pilot scheme will close when the new Student route launches.
