If your child is in Year 12 (Lower Sixth) and is considering applying to a US university, now is a good time to start exploring the options.

With almost 4,000 US universities and colleges to choose from, there is a lot to explore! We suggest that rather than focusing only on the ‘big’ name universities, you think about what would actually suit your child. Do they want a large university or a small liberal arts college? An urban campus or somewhere more rural? What subjects interest them, and would they like the flexibility to explore different areas academically?

Location, campus culture, sport, societies, research and internship opportunities can all be important too.

There is no need to have a final list at this stage. Year 12 / Lower Sixth is about exploring, asking questions and discovering what feels like the right fit. By Year 13 / Upper Sixth, that research can become a much more focused university list.

Starting early makes the whole process feel considerably more manageable and we are here to help.

Today is International Literacy Day, a global reminder that access to reading and writing is a fundamental human right. Coincidentally, today is also the birthday of American civil rights icon Ruby Bridges.

In 1960, 6-year-old Ruby walked past angry crowds to integrate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School, fighting for her right to receive a quality education. Her bravery reminds us that literacy and education equity are inextricably linked.

Today, let’s honor Ruby’s legacy by continuing the global fight for equal educational opportunities for every child. 📚

Right now students from around the world are arriving on campuses across the United States, ready to begin a a new chapter in their education.

For some it will be their first time living away from home, for others, their first experience of life in the US. All will be stepping into new communities, meeting people from different backgrounds and discovering new interests.

At Arcus Advisory, we know just how much thought, preparation and determination goes into reaching this point. We celebrate the students we have worked with as they embark on their university journeys: we wish you a wonderful start to university life. When families begin looking at US universities, it’s often the names they look at first, …

But the best place to start is with the student, asking questions like:

• Would they thrive on a large campus, or be more at home in a small college community?

• Would they relish the energy of a city, or prefer a self contained campus?

• Do they enjoy being stretched by discussion and debate, or do they thrive in a more structured academic environment?

• Most importantly, what makes them feel engaged, challenged and genuinely excited to learn?

There is no single “best” university. There is only the university that is the right fit for the student, and sometimes the answer is not necessarily the name you expected.

Summer is about more than switching off.

Use the long days to pursue something you genuinely enjoy. Read widely, explore a new interest, travel, volunteer, gain work experience or simply spend time doing something that inspires you.

For students preparing for university, these experiences can help develop curiosity, independence and a clearer sense of who you are and what matters to you.

And, importantly, leave space for doing nothing at all. Rest, reflection and time away from the pressure of applications are valuable too.
