How do you create a tighter, more metallic sound from your dead notes?
A dead note isn’t produced by simply releasing the pressure from your fretting hand and hitting the strings. The position of both hands changes the sound considerably.

Moving your picking hand further forward changes the attack. You can then experiment with where your fretting hand rests across the strings without actually fretting a note.

Different areas of the fretboard produce different harmonic responses.

Some positions allow unwanted harmonics to ring out, while others create a shorter, tighter and more percussive dead note. The objective is to find the position that gives you the metallic attack you want without introducing extra harmonic noise.

You can also learn how to apply the technique within songs such as Monuments’ The Uncollective, rather than only practising it as an isolated exercise.
