Can you match the dance to the health condition?

Researchers have investigated whether different styles of dance can improve health and wellbeing.

Can you match the dance style to the condition it was studied with?

Samba Dance
Irish Dance
Belly dance

Which one was researched for:

Breast Cancer
Cardiovascular Health
Parkinson’s Disease

I’ll reveal the answers during this week’s Introduction to Dance Psychology session, where we’ll look at what the research actually found, and why different dance styles may produce different physical, psychological and social benefits.

The next course starts on 15th July. Link in bio.

Dancing has played a significant role throughout my cancer journey.

First, 5 years ago, it was a great way to deal with the psychological consequences of the diagnosis and treatment.

This time around I’m dancing (and not dancing!) to try to build up physical strength and overcome persistent fatigue following radiotherapy, which I have found utterly exhausting.

I hear, “don’t fight the fatigue” and “listen to your body”. Both excellent pieces of advice.

I get restless and need to move my body. I always start with a slow sway. But it’s never enough. Once the groove gets you it’s hard to stop.

We’ll be discussing the literature on dance and cancer (and other health conditions) as part of the Introduction to Dance Psychology course this week. The next course starts on 15th July.

What is the mind doing when we dance?

Tonight in Session 4 of An Introduction to Dance Psychology we explore dance from a cognitive perspective.

We’ll ask:

Does changing the way you move change the way you think?

How do dancers think movement?

Can disrupting movement increase creativity?

We’ll also explore mental imagery, chunking, biological motion, improvisation, embodied cognition, and why cognitive scientists collaborated with choreographer Wayne McGregor to study dance and thinking.

Cohort 2 starts 15 July 2026

At Thursday’s Dance Psychology session we were celebrating examples of open social dancing, and also lamenting its demise in some communities.

Social dancing in public spaces and at festivals is related to a range of positive social benefits, such as reduced loneliness and increased social connectedness.

How can we encourage more public social dancing in a meaningful way?

The next opportunity to join the Introduction to Dance Psychology course is on 15th July 2026.

Enrolment is now open. Link in bio.

Did you know that we are a nation of spontaneous dancers and, according to a recent Lindahl’s survey, 86% of Brits believe that spontaneous movement significantly or moderately improves their mood and reduces stress?

I’ve been working with Lindahls Protein () on their campaign, celebrating the positive impact that dance has on our daily well-being.

But that’s not all – If you’re a boogie loving person, your moves could win you £10,000 and a year’s supply of protein products.

Here’s how to enter:
