Thank you to the Social Market Foundation for inviting Young Enterprise to the launch of its latest research into how a young person's first job can shape their future career progression and social mobility.

The findings were striking. Young people whose first jobs offered support, training and clear opportunities to progress went on to earn significantly more by age 35 than those who started in lower-mobility roles.

A good first job can make a lasting difference. But with almost one million young people currently not in education, employment or training, we need to start building skills, confidence and aspirations long before they enter the workplace.

At Young Enterprise, we believe social mobility starts before a first job. Through enterprise and financial education, young people gain the confidence, experience and essential skills they need to thrive in work and life.

Faye Boswell, founder and CEO of Sensified Spaces, knows first-hand the power of saying yes to an opportunity.

As a student, Faye took part in the Young Enterprise programme, an experience she says helped her build confidence, recognise her potential, and make her voice heard.

Today, she helps organisations create healthier workplaces through mental health and wellbeing training, and is now giving back as a Start Up mentor.

What a fantastic summer it's been with National Grid, filled with inspiring experiences and transformative opportunities for young people!

YE joined National Grid at Warwick House to celebrate the successful completion of the Pathways to Progress summer work placements, recognising the achievements of 10 inspiring young people from London and the Midlands. Over the course of their placements, the young people stepped outside their comfort zones, developed new skills, built professional networks, and gained first-hand insight into a wide range of careers.

“One thing that’s surprised me on my National Grid work placement is all the opportunities that have been provided for us. For example, we got to go to multiple substations, dress up in PPE, go to the offices, present to employees, and all in just 2 weeks. The people and the experience were amazing and insightful, and an opportunity that I am very grateful for.”
Year 12 Student, London.

The celebration event was a powerful reminder of what can happen when young people are given the opportunity to experience the workplace firsthand. From developing professional skills to building aspirations for the future, each student has taken an important step forward in their journey.

A huge thank you to the incredible colleagues at National Grid for your ongoing support and encouragement. Pathways to Progress is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when we work together to create meaningful opportunities that help young people realise their potential.

Imagine having your financial education lessons in a van. These students did 🚌

Head of Mathematics at Park Community School, a , shares a memorable learning experience for their students this year.

"We had a visit from the Barclays UK van. Some of our Year 10 students learned more about being safer with their money and the warning signs to spot scams and avoid fraud. They also learned what a money mule referred to and how to be aware of the dangers of being taken advantage of in this way.

At the end of the session, students were given the chance to ask questions, and areas such as bank accounts and credit rating were discussed, further exposing them to different aspects of financial education and preparing them for the world outside of school. A unique and very beneficial experience that our students enjoyed, and we look forward to offering this experience to many more groups of students in the future."

Park Community School has incorporated strong financial education into its curriculum through the support of the Centres of Excellence programme.

In collaboration with The Smallpeice Trust , YE supported National Grid at their Global Training Academy, welcoming 19 students to a residential programme designed to raise awareness of careers in the energy sector and help build future talent pipelines.

The experience had a powerful impact on students' confidence, skills, and aspirations, demonstrating how early employer engagement can broaden horizons, challenge perceptions, and inspire greater diversity within industry. National Grid’s Pathways to Progress continues to provide meaningful experiences, industry insights, and access to role models, helping to shape future talent pipelines while making a lasting difference to young people.
