💅🏼 Let’s clear up the confusion about the TPO ban…
After all the recent discussion in the media, I’ve received quite a few messages from clients and nail technicians asking what the TPO ban actually means. So, I thought it would be easier to explain everything in one post 😊
First of all, gel nails are NOT being banned 🙌🏼 The new rules apply specifically to products containing TPO.
In Great Britain, manufacturers and brands have no longer been allowed to introduce new TPO-containing cosmetic products onto the market since 15 August 2026.
Products that were legally placed on the market before that date may still be sold until 14 February 2027. After that, they can no longer be sold, supplied or given away.
However, the current industry guidance is that nail technicians may continue using products they legally purchased before the deadline until they run out—as long as the products are still within their recommended expiry or period after opening.
So, in simple terms:
💅🏼 You do not need to panic or immediately throw your professional products away.
💅🏼 Check your ingredient lists and speak directly to your brand or supplier if you are unsure whether a product contains TPO.
💅🏼 Always purchase from reputable, authorised suppliers and keep your invoices or proof of purchase.
💅🏼 After 14 February 2027, products containing TPO must not be bought, sold, gifted or transferred—but legally acquired professional stock may still be used under the current Great Britain guidance.
TPO was previously permitted in professional artificial nail products at concentrations of up to 5%. The change follows its classification as a reproductive toxicant based on animal studies. This does not mean that harm to humans from normal professional salon use has been proven, but regulations are changing as a precaution and brands are reformulating their products.
As a Crystal Nails educator and nail technician, I will always follow the latest UK legislation and the official guidance provided by the brand. My priority remains the health and safety of my clients and students, along with using professional products correctly—avoiding skin contact, curing them properly and following the complete system recommended by the manufacturer.
So please don’t panic or cancel your nail appointments 😊
Gel manicures are not disappearing, and there are already many compliant, TPO-free products available.
