BLOOMBERG 2015/2016

RGUTC students in Y12 and Y13 are working for the next two years in partnership with Bloomberg UK.

They are following a bespoke programme designed specifically for Engineering and Construction students to give them a flavour of all aspects of work involved on a major construction project.

In January 1987, Bloomberg opened its first office in London with 38 employees. By the late 1990s, they had more than 900 employees working in their London offices. In December 2010 they embarked in the construction of their new European Headquarters to suit their growing employee population. The new building at the heart of the City of London is key to Bloomberg’s future growth in Europe and globally and will stand as a symbol of their past successes and future ambitions.

The central London site, occupies 3.2 acres and will provide approximately 500,000 square feet of sustainable office space in collaboration with their design partners, Sir Norman Foster of Foster + Partners.

They are creating a building that captures their company’s ‘DNA of open spaces and technological innovation, while embracing the City of London’s rich tradition.’

Twenty five students at the Royal Greenwich UTC have been given the unique opportunity to work on real life problems encountered by different partners involved directly with the new building. Students have begun the first of six modules where they are working in teams on specific real-life problems involving concrete pouring, architecture, electrical installation and sustainability.

The modules will give students an insight into the different types of careers involved in building a new build from scratch. Students will have mentoring opportunities, work experience and internship placements with some of the most innovative professionals in the world of construction.

The majority of the sessions will take place at Bloomberg’s current European Headquarters at Finsbury Square with many sessions also taking place on the builiding site, 1 Walbrook Square.

On the evening of 13th October 2015, Dr Castelluccio took 8 of our top Mathematicians to the annual Ada Lovelace Day Live! Event at The Freethinkers Hall, The Ethical Society.
This was a SOLD OUT event, ‘Celebrating the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths’. We were lucky enough to win a scholarship from the Slack Foundation for 9 free tickets which would normally cost £20.00 each.
The event played host to the UK’s most fabulous women in STEM.
The speakers included Abigail Hutty, senior spacecraft structures engineer on Airbus’ ExoMars Rover Project. Dr Jen Gupta, an astrophysicist and science communicator based in the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at the University of Portsmouth.
Dr Sujata Kundu, a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London. A nanochemist both literally and professionally, Suze’s research focuses on materials that can capture solar energy. Photo: Ed Prosser, Royal Institution

Yesterday we visited the BBC Broadcasting House as part of our BBC News School Report, to go behind the scenes and into the studio! Our students got the chance to interview Nick Grimshaw on the BBC Radio 1 breakfast show, and were interviewed live by Sarah-Jane Crawford on BBC Radio 1Xtra
