Children at Bayswater and Hampstead Elementary had their annual Sports Day yesterday at Hampstead Heath, on what was luckily a gloriously sunny day! The children were all mixed together and then split into 5 groups, with each group containing children from all four Elementary classes.
The sports the children participated in were: Long Jump, Low Hurdles and Sprint, Bean Bag Toss and Tug of War, Obstacle Course Relay and Sack Race.
As is the Montessori way, the atmosphere was one of collaboration and companionship, with all the children cheering and supporting each other and there was even a race with the parents included at the end as well!

Rhianna Hayllor studied the AMI 3-6 Diploma at the Maria Montessori Institute and graduated in 2023. She enrolled on the course to support her son's development and growing independence, but in researching Montessori and reading some of the literature, she says: 'I began to reflect on traditional systems of education – and the UK government’s approach to early years’ settings and couldn’t help but feel that children were often being denied the most enriching and constructive start in life.'

"As nurseries grapple with ever-tightening budgets, the inevitable consequence is a reduction in staff salaries and the employment of less expensive and, therefore, less qualified staff. This downward spiral not only undermines the value of early years as a career, but also compromises the quality of education and care provided for children at a stage which research shows is critical to their development. This could have consequences for their long-term wellbeing and fulfilment of their potential", says Louise Livingston , our Head of Training.

Our next Montessori will be held on Thursday 23rd May at the Maria Montessori School - Bayswater and will cover the progression of one mathematics material, the Bead Cabinet, beginning with the geometrical patterns presented in the Children’s House (2.5 - 6 year olds) and continuing with squaring and cubing in the Elementary (6-12 year olds).
Maths is traditionally a subject that can be particularly difficult for children to understand and often times a struggle due to its abstract nature. Discover how this is overcome successfully in Montessori education with the use of concrete materials, an absence of testing and unpressured time for children to learn at their own pace, which brings meaning and understanding to the child and often leads to an actual enjoyment of the subject.
This in-person only talk is open to our current school parents as well as to parents who want to learn more about and The Maria Montessori School.

Calling all both within our lovely community and those new to the Maria Montessori School or perhaps to the Montessori method itself. Join us for our next Montessori Parent Talk which will be held on Wednesday 8th May, 6.30pm at our CCalling all both within our lovely community and those new to the Maria Montessori School or perhaps to the Montessori method itself. Join us for our next Montessori Parent Talk which will be held on Wednesday 8th May, 6.30pm at our C End site.
This talk will be about Practical Life which is one of the pillars of Montessori education. Maria Montessori observed that children were more interested in doing tasks that are normally considered 'adult' tasks, than playing with their toys. In this talk, gain an understanding of the exercises of practical life (such as food handling and preparation, baking, cleaning, washing, dressing, gardening, flower arranging and more) and the essential role it plays in developing concentration, coordinated movement, strategical thinking and independence, and how these skills support the child’s success.

As children in our Upper Elementary classes at both Hampstead and Bayswater enjoy their first day of Montessori Model United Nations in Rome today, here's one of the exercises they did to prepare for their trip.
The Upper Elementary children split up into groups and the children in each of those groups researched the culture and customs of their particular country and put together posters illustrating this. They later presented what they had learnt to friends in the Lower Elementary classes.
The MMUN is a multi-day global education simulation experience that enables students in upper elementary and middle schools to learn about the operations of the UN and its role as the world’s largest international peacekeeping and humanitarian organization.
We hope the children who went to MMUN have a fantastic time and we can't wait to hear the stories and see the photos from the trip!

**Last chance to book** - How can we balance the adult’s will against the child’s will in a Montessori environment?
Our Head of Training Louise Livingston will lead a short online course "To Will Or Not To Will" on this topic - especially for teachers working with children under six years. Starting in May it will look closely at Montessori's writings on the conceptualisation of the will and draw on current educational neuroscience.
Some of the questions that will be addressed in this course are:
-How do I balance the apparently contradictory ideas of being relentless in my effort to engage children in purposeful activity against allowing them to make their own spontaneous independent choices?
-How do I know when to step back so the child’s will can emerge?
-Do I really understand my own will and the effect it has on the development of the will of children?
and more!

Chicks! 🐥🐣
Children at the Maria Montessori School - Crouch End recently received some chicks and have watched all 8 of them hatch (though sadly 2 of the chicks didn’t). They learnt about the different parts of a chicken through the use of classified cards and how to clean their box, feed them as well as the chance to hold them! This has allowed the children the experience of caring for some animals.
One child also sewed the letters you hear in the word “chick” and placed it above the chick's box (as seen in the photos). This included the phonograms for “ch”.
