Happy Valentine's Day! Children in our school celebrated by baking bread and other sweet treats which they then sold to parents and children in a bake sale to raise funds to pay for classroom pets.

In celebration of love, in all its forms, here's a bit of wisdom from Maria Montessori herself:
'The child who has felt a strong love for his surroundings and for all living creatures, who has discovered joy and enthusiasm in work, gives us reason to hope that humanity can develop in a new direction.'

Happy Chinese / Lunar New Year to all who celebrate! 🐉

Children in our Hampstead elementary classes celebrated by decorating their classrooms with lanterns they had folded themselves (red one) or pre-bought ones (white) which they tied up to different areas in the classroom such as fireplace and ceiling. They also created some origami paper pouches with a cute pre-bought paper dragon (for the Year of the Dragon) inside which were distributed to each child at the end of the day to take home and stuck some Chinese New Year themed stickers on the windows. Children in our Upper Elementary class also created some handmade bright colourful paper lanterns and painted a 'Happy New Lunar Year' sign.

We were recently visited by teachers from the ‘Montessori Hogar’ School in Peru who brought letters that children in their school had written for children at our school! The Bayswater and Hampstead Upper Elementary children worked with Elementary Spanish Teacher, María, to write their reply letters and decorated them really nicely with drawings and burnt edges for a retro effect!

This photo shows some of the letters that the Bayswater Elementary children wrote and made. María went over some sentences with them such as 'Yo me llamo...' (My name is...), and 'Me gusta...' (I like...) but many of the children were able to come up with things to say in Spanish with little help. The children first drafted the letters on regular paper, reviewing the spelling with María, before copying the final version onto the letter paper.

Thank you to the Montessori Hogar children and teachers for this lovely gesture.

If you ever need any help with your washing up, this little boy at the Maria Montessori School - Abbey Road has got you covered! 🥰

Maria Montessori observed that children were more interested in doing tasks that are normally considered 'adult' tasks, than playing with their toys. She also realised that these adult tasks provided huge satisfaction for the child.

'It is interesting to notice that where life is simple and natural and where the children participate in the adult’s life, they are calm and happy.' Maria Montessori.

Washing is one of the Montessori Practical Life activities - these give the child a sense of purpose, help the children to gain control over their bodies, and giving them an opportunity to become a contributing party within their community.

By far the most common phrase we hear from both current and prospective parents when they come and observe one of our classrooms and see how confident, calm, engaged and caring our children are. Another parent said: 'all schools should be Montessori schools', we wholeheartedly agree.

If you've heard of Montessori but have any questions or doubts, attending a classroom observation at any of our 5 sites will give you a good insight as to how it really does support child development and not just for school but also for life. Montessori has to be seen, felt and experienced in order for it to make sense, which is why these classroom observations are so revealing.

Experience this yourself - book a classroom observation at any of our 5 sites: (N19), (NW6), (W11), (W2) or (NW3) here > https://bit.ly/3PnkbXz

This video demonstrates how a second language, in this case, Spanish, is learnt the Montessori way. The children work with Montessori materials every day to help them learn and understand abstract concepts and so are familiar with how each material is called in English. The Spanish teacher cleverly used the materials to teach the children how they are called in Spanish, first using the materials themselves while uttering the Spanish words for them and later (as in this video) using flash cards with the names of the materials written on them.

In this way, children aren't taught to parrot words in a foreign language memorised from a textbook but rather, learn in a way that is concrete, relatable and meaningful.

Our Spanish Language Programme is led by trained AMI Montessori Teachers and is implemented with a Montessori approach at all age groups within the Maria Montessori School. The children learn to engage in another language through movement, games, music, drama, and practical life activities, such as cooking and outings, as well as numeracy, writing, and grammar. The Spanish lessons and activities are presented during the school day and in a way that naturally flows within the daily work cycle.

This lesson took place at the Maria Montessori School - Notting Hill, which is English-Mandarin bilingual, meaning children are also exposed to Mandarin with a Montessori approach. Find out about our Notting Hill site for 2½ – 6 year olds https://bit.ly/3sGohis

Children at the Maria Montessori School - Hornsey Rise have been doing several activities in preparation for Christmas and Hanukkah: baking gingerbread cookies, making Christmas decorations, learning about Hanukkah, making an advent calendar (last two photos) and thinking of some kind actions they could carry out such as making snacks for their friends, or a picture for their friends, or offering someone a hug or being the teacher for the morning and helping others which was popped into the drawers of the advent calendar.

During the countdown to Christmas they have been doing a lovely daily ritual where all lights are switched off each morning as each child has a turn to choose something from the advent calendar and then they light the candle and have a couple of minutes of quiet reflect on something they love (such as potatoes as mentioned by one of the children!) or something they are grateful for – one of the children said they were grateful for their friends! ❤️
