🎻🎶 Student Spotlight – Pelican Music Newsletter

Julian began his musical journey in 2024 and has grown into a focused, joyful, and passionate young musician. From singing and violin lessons with Nino and Kenza to joining the Saturday Strings programme with Lisa, his progress has been inspiring to watch.

With creativity, confidence, and a genuine love for music, Julian brings energy into every lesson and performance — and we’re so proud of how far he’s come.

Here’s a collection of words from both of his teachers:

Kenza, violin teacher: “Julian comes into every lesson radiating with joy and sparkle. He is a dedicated and passionate student who cares for and loves the violin deeply. His musical intuition, eagerness to progress and meticulous nature make him a wonderful student and musician.

Nino, singing teacher: “Julian is a joy to teach - he diligently practices, is enthusiast during lessons, and has a very musical ear. Recently, Julian has been working on shaping his sound and phrasing. He is also working towards Grade 2, having achieved a well-deserved Distinction in Grade 1.”

🎹 Student Spotlight – Pelican Music Newsletter

Esha has been learning piano since 2021 and has shown amazing commitment and enthusiasm. Her teachers describe her as polite, dedicated, and always well-prepared for lessons.

This year, she’s made wonderful progress in finger dexterity, chord playing, and confidence with note reading. We first noticed Esha at a concert, shy but full of calm focus at the piano — a beautiful reminder of how music lets children express themselves.

She has performed in major concert halls across Europe, including the Royal Festival Hall and Barbican Hall, and regularly works with leading orchestras in Portugal.

🎸 Student Sibling Spotlight - Pelican Music Newsletter

This month, we are shining the spotlight on one of the many sibling families in our community, in recognition of their dedication and commitment to music. Not only do they show great enthusiasm and progress as students and musicians, but they are also supported by wonderfully engaged parents who play a key role in their musical journey. It is always a joy to see how families grow musically together and become more and more involved in our Pelican community.

James, who is currently in Year 4, began his guitar journey in 2024 with Matthew Nunn, with whom he continues to study today. They both greatly enjoy their lessons, and I particularly love James’s feedback from Matthew, which highlights what a promising young musician he is. Matthew notes James’s strong interest in music, demonstrated through his thoughtful questions about the guitar and music in general. James is building a solid foundation on the guitar, and this year he is expected to master his first longer pieces of music.

See Matthew’s feedback: “James is an enthusiastic and musically proficient student who excels in his sight reading and rhythmic skills. As a multi-instrumentalist, James is able to play the same pieces on both the guitar and the piano, and has come far in the last year as a guitar player.

I especially appreciate James’ interest in music as demonstrated by his thoughtful questions about the guitar and music in general. He is building a good foundation on the guitar which this year will result in him mastering his first longer pieces of music!

Go James! You are always a fun student to teach- I’m looking forward to what this year holds in store for you!”

🎄 Day 24 of our Advent Music Countdown!

Today we’re spotlighting Polina, who began her piano lessons at the end of September. Polina discovered Shchedryk — widely known as Carol of the Bells — by renowned Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, and learned the piece entirely on her own. With her family roots in Ukraine, Polina was excited to share a piece that connects deeply to her heritage.

Isn’t it beautiful how music allows us to feel, remember, and reconnect with the parts of ourselves? We’re so happy to have Polina as part of the Pelican family, and we can’t wait to hear more meaningful stories from our students, parents, and teachers.

Last day of the countdown is tomorrow — who’s excited? 🎶
