For millennia, theatre has brought people together. It is a natural human urge to watch and tell stories about our lives and the world we live in, to process the feelings we have and to reflect upon the human condition. In an age where we are all glued to screens big and small, it is even more important to look up, be present, and experience the world together - and what better way than through storytelling?
…..
Both the making and attending of theatre contribute to education and literacy. Watching the characters talk back and forth in the theatre is tricky; it requires sharp attention, quick mental shifts, and nimble language skills. It teaches us about human motivation and psychology. In historical plays we get lessons in leadership and government. In contemporary plays, we learn about people and cultures. Studies have shown that students who participate in theatre do better in school. Making plays together also draws kids out of their shells and helps them learn to socialise in a productive and healthy way.
…..
One of the amazing benefits of joining a drama class is how it helps your confidence grow. You may start off feeling nervous at the thought of performing in front of the smallest audience, but you'll be surprised at how before long you are up on stage without any nerves. Even performing in front of your fellow class members will soon become a comfortable experience.
….
Participating in a drama class can even be helpful in your career. For example, many people are intimidated by the thought of giving presentations at work, or get nervous when they have a job interview. This is where drama comes in - you learn techniques that will help you, and get used to appearing in front of an audience.

Countless academic studies have examined the benefits to health and wellbeing that come along with participating in music, from helping children with severe emotional challenges to attend and thrive at school, to slowing and even reversing age and illness-related declines in mental functioning (University of St Andrews, 2013). Musical activity even at moderate levels can have a beneficial impact on brain function, so learning an instrument can have repercussions way beyond the practice room.
…….
There is even evidence that musical activity actually changes the structure of the brain, leading to an increase in IQ of up to seven points in both children and adults (University of Zurich, 2009). The same study showed how the aural processing areas of the brain are enhanced, with demonstrable impacts on learning languages, and critical thinking. The enhancement of these audio processes has also been shown to help musicians empathise at greater depth through a more acute perception of tone of voice.
……
Learning an instrument has also been proven to increase the successful treatment of anxiety and depression in both children and adults (Berklee College of Music, Boston, 2013). The same study looked at the physical benefits, including lowering blood pressure, decreasing heart rate and enhancing immunological responses.

We may not notice it all the time, but art is all around us; from the design of buses, shop fronts and even shopping bags, to festive displays and fireworks. Living in a world that looks nice is clearly a priority for all humans, and making it that way can be very therapeutic indeed.
…..
Art education can be more than just drawing, painting or sculpting; it can nurture creativity, critical thinking, and empathy. Creating art cultivates problem-solving skills applicable in various parts of life, and exposure to diverse artistic traditions enhances cultural awareness, fostering empathy and tolerance. Importantly, creating art serves as a therapeutic outlet, aiding mental well-being by alleviating stress and promoting mindfulness. In today’s world, where innovation is paramount, art education plays a pivotal role in shaping individuals equipped with the creativity and adaptability crucial for success in diverse fields. But it doesn’t have to; creating art can be purely for pleasure and have no direction or purpose - it doesn’t matter!
…..
Whatever your age, background, or reason for wanting to take an art class, we’ve got something for you. Some of our classes focus on a particular skill, some take a wide view - whichever you choose, you are welcome to come along and take whatever you need from it. Art is for everyone and by everyone!

The History of the Conservatoire, Blackheath

The History of the Conservatoire, Blackheath

Today the Conservatoire delivers group and individual courses with classes suitable from birth to adult learning. We offer music classes, art courses and drama and acting classes. However, until just over 25 years ago the organisation was originally two entities, one focusing on music and drama and the other art.

A Genuine Grassroots Community Initiative

The Blackheath Conservatoire of the Arts is the result of the grassroots action of the local South East London community. In 1881 local residents formed the Blackheath Conservatoire of Music, and, fourteen years later, the Blackheath, Lee and Lewisham School of Art. Driven by a desire to bring the arts to Blackheath they purchased shares in a company established by local resident William Webster. The income generated funded the building of the Conservatoire of Music (opened in 1896) and the School of Art (opened a year later), both designed by Edmeston and Gabriel and Grade 2 listed in 1992. Many of the founders were influential professional musicians and artists, which led to a very high quality of tuition. With the adjoining concert venue, the Blackheath Halls, we form part of the oldest surviving purpose-built arts complex in London.
