Our programme providing free arts classes for asylum seekers and refugees can help to play a small part in providing a sense of community, belonging and security. Singing together is good for us, and can even have a positive impact in the difficult circumstances our choir members are living through.
…..
Please help us keep it going by donating or sharing amongst friends and family.

“I’m the oldest member of the Ukrainian choir at age 71. I’d like to say how much I enjoy the companionship and the opportunity to remember my traditions through song, and to dream and think of a happy future in our Motherland.”

In 2023-24 we provided over 700 free places to refugees and asylum seekers through our Refugee Sanctuary Through Arts & Culture campaign, allowing them to participate in high-quality arts, music and drama classes (with language support). The Arts For Impact campaign will help us to extend this programme into 2025.

Is it worth donating just a small amount?
……
YES of course! Amazingly, the Big Give is match-funded, which means that every donation is doubled!! Even if you only donate £1, it’ll become £2, and we will be grateful for every single pound that we raise from this campaign, as it’ll help us contribute to the wellbeing of people who have come here seeking refuge and comfort.

'We value spending time with Ukrainians. It is important for us to sing Ukrainian folk songs and we can see it is important for our choir. It is good to have a connection with home and it is good for non-Ukrainians to hear Ukrainian language and music. The Conservatoire is a lovely place, it's a lovely room - we feel warm and welcome.'

For many of us, it’s almost impossible to imagine having to leave your own country to escape war, persecution, or danger. There’s not much we can do, but through this programme we can give people who have come here seeking refuge a creative outlet and contribute to their wellbeing and sense of belonging. Please help us keep it going by donating or sharing amongst friends and family.

I remember the first day I went to my guitar class; I couldn’t even hold the guitar properly. But now I know a few songs, though I’m still learning. For me, the guitar is not just an instrument but a feeling, a refuge I turn to amid the chaos of war news." - Gorgin, from Iran

When we first launched our programme of free classes for asylum seekers and refugees, we had high hopes for the impact it could have on people’s lives. This video of our Ukrainian Choir singing together is a wonderful example of that impact, and how meaningful the arts can be to wellbeing and a sense of community.

The History of the Conservatoire, Blackheath

The History of the Conservatoire, Blackheath

Today the Conservatoire delivers group and individual courses with classes suitable from birth to adult learning. We offer music classes, art courses and drama and acting classes. However, until just over 25 years ago the organisation was originally two entities, one focusing on music and drama and the other art.

A Genuine Grassroots Community Initiative

The Blackheath Conservatoire of the Arts is the result of the grassroots action of the local South East London community. In 1881 local residents formed the Blackheath Conservatoire of Music, and, fourteen years later, the Blackheath, Lee and Lewisham School of Art. Driven by a desire to bring the arts to Blackheath they purchased shares in a company established by local resident William Webster. The income generated funded the building of the Conservatoire of Music (opened in 1896) and the School of Art (opened a year later), both designed by Edmeston and Gabriel and Grade 2 listed in 1992. Many of the founders were influential professional musicians and artists, which led to a very high quality of tuition. With the adjoining concert venue, the Blackheath Halls, we form part of the oldest surviving purpose-built arts complex in London.
