Alternative Provision is often misunderstood. Too many people still associate AP with exclusion or failure, when in reality it is some of the most skilled, relationship-focused work happening in education today.
Behind every successful AP setting are professionals helping young people rebuild trust, confidence, emotional wellbeing and engagement with learning.
It's time to move beyond outdated assumptions and recognise the expertise, care and impact that Alternative Provision delivers every day. Read our latest blog by guest writer Gemma Harvey from We Are Louise.

We're delighted to have been shortlisted for Alterna Prestige awards!
To be recognised alongside so many dedicated individuals and organisations across the Alternative Provision sector is a real privilege.
At Fresh Start in Education, everything we do is driven by a simple belief: every child and young person deserves access to education, regardless of their circumstances. This nomination reflects the commitment, passion and expertise of our incredible team and the Local Authorities, schools and families we work alongside every day.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate us and congratulations to all those who have made it through to the Judges' Round. We look forward to celebrating the outstanding work taking place across the sector on 3rd July.

94%. Across more than 3,000 students.
That's our successful outcomes rate in alternative provision, a sector where outcomes are notoriously hard to measure, let alone achieve at scale.
We don't treat this as a headline number. We treat it as the standard we have to keep meeting, student by student, placement by placement.
Behind it sits the work that rarely gets posted about: the safeguarding calls, matching education specialists to students, the meetings with local authorities and schools, the small adjustments that keep a young person engaged when school hasn't worked for them.
Consistency at this volume isn't luck. It's process, the right people and partnerships with local authorities who trust us to deliver when timelines are tight and stakes are high.
To every client, staff member and parent/carer who's been part of those 3000+ journeys, thank you for trusting us with the work that matters.

Alternative Provision is often spoken about through the lens of compliance, outcomes and systems… but underneath all of that is something quieter, and far more powerful: care.
This blog by Jade Neivens-Brown explores the relational heart of Alternative Provision - the compassion, flexibility and belief in young people that sits at the centre of the sector.
It’s also an honest reflection on why passion alone is not enough, and why strong safeguarding, quality assurance and structure are essential to protecting the incredible work happening across AP.
“Care is not a strategy in AP. It is the operating system.”
If you work in education, SEND or Alternative Provision, this is well worth a read.
