As we settle into a new academic year, Ed shares a few words about what continues to drive us at Fresh Start in Education and the difference the right support can make for young people who need a different route through education.

Every young person’s journey is different. Our role is to meet them where they are, build relationships, create opportunities and, above all, inspire hope for a future.

When a young person has been out of school for months, the first question is not what level they are working at. It is whether they feel safe enough to try.

That is where re-engagement starts, and it is where a lot of well-meaning measurement goes wrong.

We understand the attainment pressure schools and local authorities face from the start. But measuring academic progress in week two often misses the point entirely. Confidence, trust and regulated behaviour are the foundations everything else is built on.

The sequence matters: safety, then connection, then learning.

Attainment data has its place, but it belongs at stage three, well after stage one. When targets are set before re-engagement is established, students often disengage again. Skipping steps does not accelerate progress. It reverses it.

A student who shows up is already making progress. That counts before any test score does.

The measure of a good interim placement is more than the grade at the end. It is whether the young person is ready to stay in education at all.

That order is what sits behind our 94% successful outcomes rate, and it is why we build every interim, engagement, and education package around coming back first.

This young person’s growing confidence, independence and excitement for the future show the difference that feeling truly understood can make.

We’re incredibly proud of his progress, and of his Education Specialist, whose dedication, compassion and belief in him have made a difference to the whole family.

As one professional beautifully put it: “We need lots more Education Specialists like this in the world!”

Some say 'Relationships are formed and forged around the dinner table.'😍

It’s a place where we come together, share food, stories and conversation - and where our health and wellbeing can be shaped in ways we might not always think about.

But not everyone has the same opportunities to access nutritious food, safe and welcoming spaces, or the conditions that support good health.

Health equity isn’t about giving everyone the same thing. It’s about making sure everyone has a fair opportunity to be as healthy as possible.

📣 For the first time, parents and carers can now refer directly to Fresh Start in Education.

We know how difficult it can be when a child or young person is struggling to access education, and how frustrating it can feel when you are unsure where to turn next.

Our personalised, one-to-one education and support can help young people who are experiencing barriers to learning, including anxiety, SEND, SEMH needs, school avoidance or exclusion. Every provision is built around the individual, helping them to rebuild confidence, re-engage with learning and begin looking towards the future with hope.

Until now, our referrals have primarily come through local authorities and other professional partners. Our new direct referral route means parents and carers can now approach us themselves to discuss privately funded support for their child.

If your child needs a different approach to education, our team is here to listen and talk through the options with you.

This flexible, term-time role involves delivering personalised 1:1 or 2:1 learning sessions that help students rebuild confidence, develop emotional regulation skills and re-engage with learning at their own pace.

✨ £25–£35 per hour

We're delighted to share Episode 2 of the AP Roadshow and we're incredibly proud to be featured!
