2020 has been a rollercoaster. Dramatic twists, turns and challenges for all. Despite it all, we are still here. As this year comes to a close it's important to reflect and review the 12 month journey.

I personally want to acknowledge all the incredible people and opportunities that have enabled me to not just survive as a small business owner, but against all the odds, to thrive.

Friends, family, business associates, clients and all I have met face-to-face or in the virtual world, thank you for enriching my world and giving me continued hope and vision.

I truly wish you every success in 2021. Keep rising.

Have you ever been asked an unusual or surreal question at an interview before? I have!

Questions such as "If you were an animal, what would you be?" springs to mind. Suddenly your brain goes on overdrive trying to come up with an answer that does not potentially conjure up negative connotations such as a sneaky snake, a conniving fox or a slow sloth!

Check out 4 of the seemingly irrelevant (although also very insightful) questions I have personally been asked or heard being asked in interviews before. What would be your responses?

P.s. If you would like support to prepare for an upcoming interview then please consider booking me for a virtual mock interview session, this will also include coaching and training on how to communicate confidently on camera. My 50% off Black Friday offer is available until end of Dec 2020. Message me with any questions or book here https://virtualmockinterview.youcanbook.me

Virtual Interview Tip #3:
🌟CONTENT PREPARATION🌟

Planning and preparing what you want to say in your is key, so research the organisation and prepare answers for classic interview questions, such as: ‘tell me about yourself,’ your strengths/ weaknesses and specific examples to back up your competencies relevant to the role. However don’t try and learn your answers like a script, instead identify key points to talk about. A brilliant (although slightly sneaky) I use is to tape post-it notes with keywords around my laptop as reminders!

VIRTUAL INTERVIEW TIP #2.

Space set-up: As well as thinking about what you are going to wear you also need to ‘dress’ your background. Personally, I prefer a plain wall as this eliminates distractions, however a plant or (tidy) bookshelf can add interest. Good lighting is essential, I recommend that you invest in a Ring Light. My one cost £25.00 and was well worth it.

Tip #1 for Virtual Interview Success:

GET TECH SAVVY: Find out which platform the interview will be held on (the most popular ones are Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype or WebEx) and create your own account. Become familiar with the technology, practice using the camera and microphone and record yourself to get over being ‘camera shy!’ If your Wi-Fi connection is weak, consider purchasing an Ethernet cable (they start at around £3.00 online).

Let's face it, whether we like it or not, virtual communication has forcefully exploded in 2020. This is especially true when it comes to the hiring process.

In fact, a Gartner survey found that 86% of organisations have conducted this year. With the job market especially tough right now, I urge you to consider the new skillset required to confidently communicate via camera. It's essential to stand out from the crowd, and create a positive impression.

This week I hosted Career Support online training for local authority staff in London. It's never an easy situation when organisations are going through re-structures and jobs are at risk.

When we can't control the external circumstances we must instead focus on what we can do to shift and change our situation or as Viktor Frankl so brilliantly puts it, "When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves."

When I develop and deliver training I always aim to empower, upskill, impart hope and knowledge so that candidates can make positive changes, shine bright and have the competitive edge they need to get that next job.

I received great feedback today including:

"CV tips and definitely the body language and background tips (virtual interviews) have been really useful. Also your upbeat, vibrant and cheery nature has been brilliant!"

If your organisation has a need for bespoke career support / outplacement training, get in touch with me for competitive rates.
