🩺The Apply Club Health is proud to present our next free online speaker event, this time with two experienced consultants from the London consultancy Stripe Partners:

🔸 From immersion to impact: How to ensure patient-centric data leads to patient-centric decisions within large health organisations🔸
Cyril Maury & Julian Göpffarth, Stripe Partners, London

📆 May 16th at noon CEST/ 11 am BST
📍 Online via Zoom – please signup for free via TicketTailor here 👉 https://www.tickettailor.com/events/aanapplyclubhealth/1244205

One of the primary challenges encountered by anthropologists in the healthcare sector is the translation of patient-centric data into actionable client decisions that genuinely enhance patient outcomes. This presentation explores challenges and strategies that enable close client engagement throughout the research process, spanning from revisiting existing client knowledge to immersive fieldwork and collaborative insight activation. By emphasizing the importance of this engagement, we highlight how ethnographic patient insights can profoundly influence the decision-making processes of client organizations and, consequently, improve the real-life experiences of patients.

The Apply Club Health Team is very very much looking forward to this insightful talk from one of the leading ethnography-based consulting firms in Europe. We hope to see you there. 🤝

👋Today, Markus is waving goodbye to his role as a convenor at AAN. Markus, thank you for your effort and contributions to AAN! We are wishing you all the best in your future endeavours. 🎉

As we express our gratitude to Markus, we also extend a warm welcome to Olivia Schneider, our new convenor. 🤗

Olivia Schneider recently graduated from her Master’s in Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo focusing on the cross-section of gender, health and migration. She joined the network in 2023 as Apply Club Coordinator and soon launched her first initiative with the AAN Mentorship Program. 🚀

🌟 Olivia shares her thoughts: “Frustrated with the lack of information about non-academic career paths in many universities, I wanted to support AAN's important work in raising awareness and providing concrete answers to the question asked too often by family members: "So, what can you even do with an Anthropology degree? In my time as Convenor, I will continue to facilitate networking within the Applied Anthropology community as well as promotion of Anthropology's value in a diverse range of fields and applications. Additionally, I want to focus on including more students and others at the beginning of their professional careers within the network's activities, involving them as active members that are engaged in shaping the network and its development.” 🌍

With Markus's legacy guiding us and Olivia's fresh perspective leading the way, we're excited for the future of AAN! 🌈

Let's embrace this new chapter together. Here's to the journey ahead! ✨

Rafram Chaddad @ Why the World Needs Anthropologists: The Power of Isolation 10/03/2024

Navigating Isolation: An Autoethnographic Insight into the Prison Cell 🚨⛓

Ever wondered what it's like to navigate isolation in a prison cell?

Born on Djerba, an island off the coast of southern Tunisia, Rafram Chaddad is a visual artist whose photographs, films, and multimedia installations rethink the archives and narratives of migration. In 2010, while on a photography research to Libya, Rafram was kidnapped by the secret police in Tripoli and spent six months in solitary confinement in prison Abu Salim.

New WWNA 2023 video on YouTube! 🎬

The Anthropologist and the Chat Bot: Isolated Machine Anthropology for Pandemic Isolation 🤖

Can large language models revitalize our interactions with ethnographic material after the field? Is there such a thing as generative AI for serendipity? In this talk, Anders explores the use of prompt ingestion with the open-source LLaMA 7bn model to revitalize an archive of 300 interviews. The interviews were conducted by Anders and 15 other collaborating ethnographers during the first months of COVID lockdown in Spring 2020. The interviewees were Danes experimenting at home with digital ways of reordering their disrupted everyday lives. Any one of the ethnographers had first-hand experience with but a fraction of the material and some form of navigation has therefore become necessary in order to generate surprise and prevent analyses of the material from closing itself around parts well known. Anders show how it is possible to turn the archive into what is effectively an ethnographic chatbot using only open-source components that can run locally on your own computer and thus avoid exposing the material to data exploitation by tech companies. Through the use of a vector store and semantic similarity search, the chatbot is fed custom-built prompts with relevant snippets from an ethnographic archive and thus, in its peculiar way, learns to speak like an aggregate of the informants.

Anders Kristian Munk is professor of computational anthropology at the Technical University of Denmark and former scientific director of both MASSHINE and the Techno-Anthropology Lab at the University of Aalborg in Copenhagen.
