Teaching phonics and number to your pre-schooler or toddler through stories
A guided learning experience for you to enjoy with your child

About us:
We are professional primary school teachers with 20 years teaching experience. We have taught children in Waltham Forest and nearby boroughs from reception to year 6. In addition to this we have been Literacy and Numeracy co-ordinators and have as such developed an expertise in teaching these subjects to children using the latest ideologies and child centred learning. As mothers to children ourselves, including two who are pre-schoolers, we understand how to communicate with toddlers and make incorporate learning through play. Aims of the session:
Story Start sessions aim to provide a fun and interactive approach to learning. They are designed to be the first steps on your child’s learning journey. We hope the sessions foster a love of stories and help develop your child’s concentration and confidence. With carefully selected letters and numbers reinforced through the sessions activities and through kinaesthetic, visual and audio methods, we aim to give your child a head start in reading, writing and number. About the sessions:
Story Start sessions will begin with a story book which will help develop children’s listening skills and set the theme for the activities of that day. The children will be encouraged to participate in the story; hold puppets and join in with familiar phrases. Stories will run for 2 to 3 weeks to consolidate learning. We will introduce a letter and number to the children during each session through actions and sounds before encouraging the children to explore our fun and interactive activities. Each activity is carefully created to reinforce the letter and number of the week without the children even realising they are learning! The activities will be suitable for all children and are designed to be used with parental involvement. Activities will vary week by week and will also encourage development of fine and gross motor skills; speaking and listening skills and encourage co-operation alongside number and letter recognition and formation

Early learning curriculum:
Story start sessions are based around the Early Learning Goals set within the early years national curriculum. Each session will incorporate aspects of the following Early Learning Goals:
Communication, language and learning
Physical development
Personal, social and emotional development
Literacy
Mathematics
Expressive arts and design
The teaching of phonics will incorporate the Letters and Sounds department of education programme alongside the use of Jolly phonics which is a multi-sensory method of teaching phonics.

Hi everyone. This week Story Start will be focussing on the letter M. Come and enjoy a wide range of activities for ages between 18 months and 4 years. This week our session will include craft activities such as mouse and maracas making; messy play with sand and mud and a chance to practise motor skills, communication and listening. Our sessions are drop ins and cost £5.50 per session. Hope to see you there.

Join us for eggs and elephants tomorrow at Story Start. Hand-printing,playdough,Elma and much more. A fun and educational drop in group for toddlers and preschoolers. Help develop motor skills, communication as well as phonics and number. 9.40 to 10.30 at St Peters and Paul's church hall on Station Road.

Hi everyone, just a reminder that Story Start will be at Krazy Kidz Fun Forest in Costa Coffee this Wednesday at 10am. We will be having fun with a brand new story and sound. There will be plenty of fun and educational activities including messy play, sticking and shape activities, water and pencil control activities. Your child will experience story telling and develop listening and concentration skills. They will be introduced to numbers and phonics and work on fine and gross motor skills. Each child will also be given a take home activity sheet. Sessions are run by experienced primary school teachers. Our Krazy Kidz sessions last for 45 mins and are followed by free access to the soft play area. Session price 6.50 per child. Discount available for siblings. The session can be booked through Story Story email or FB or through Penny at Krazy Kidz. Drop in also welcome numbers permitted.
