We're pleased to share a recent talk by Dr Kate Rowley, delivered at Deaf Village Ireland.
The presentation explores research on deaf people and reading, challenging some widely held assumptions about literacy and considering how a Deaf Gain perspective can contribute to our understanding of reading development.
The recording is available below. Please note that there were technical issues at the beginning of the livestream, so the presentation starts at approximately 33 minutes.
DCAL (Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre)
Welcome to the Deafness Cognition and Language (DCAL) Research Centre, based at University College L
DCAL, based at University College London (UCL), started its research in 2006 with funding from the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). It is the largest research centre in this field in Europe with a mix of staff and research students, about 1/3 of whom are Deaf. You can read about our research team and many research projects by clicking on the links at the left of this page.
New research from DCAL explores how reading ability in both deaf and hearing adults is linked to brain representations of speech derived from visual speech (speechreading).
The study found that stronger links between speechreading and language processing in the brain were associated with better reading ability.

Hi, I’m Zahra, a deaf PhD student at UCL. I’m looking for deaf adults in the UK to take part in my PhD research about BSL and thinking skills. They need to be born deaf, not an university graduate and can either be born in the UK or born abroad and learnt sign language before 5 years old.
If you're interested or know someone who might be, please email me at [email protected]

DCAL’s Calum Medlock recently attended in Vienna as part of the SignGPT project.
During the conference, he gave a sponsor talk, presented a poster, and met researchers, developers and deaf professionals from around the world to discuss the future of sign language technologies.

Calum is representing SignGPT at the DeafTech conference, sharing our poster on AI for Sign Language Technologies – bringing together communities alongside collaborators from UCL, University of Surrey, and Oxford.
Really good to see so many researchers, Deaf community members, technologists, and accessibility specialists all in one place discussing the future of sign language technology, ethics, AI, and inclusive design.
DCAL has submitted its response to the Government’s SEND reforms consultation.
Our response raises concerns that deaf children and young people are being overlooked within the proposed reforms, including issues around BSL recognition, language access, specialist support, and Qualified Teachers of the Deaf.
