Introducing Citizenship education in the primary classroom this term? Our KS1 unit, What makes me, me, and what makes us a community?, gives pupils the opportunity to explore their identities, understand belonging and think about the different groups and communities they are part of. Through discussion, debate and collaborative activities, pupils explore similarities and differences and consider how diversity can help communities thrive.

The unit is part of ACT’s Model Core Curriculum for Citizenship and helps build the foundations for active citizenship from an early age.

What does Citizenship education look like in a specialist SEND setting?

In our latest ACT Teaching Ambassador Spotlight, Nicola Foyle shares her experience of teaching Citizenship at High Grange School and the impact the subject can have on her students. Nicola talks about why her students were drawn to GCSE Citizenship Studies, the importance of helping young people understand how politics affects their everyday lives, and a memorable school-wide mock election organised by her GCSE students.

As we begin a new school year, it’s a great reminder of the difference Citizenship can make in helping every young person develop the knowledge, confidence and critical thinking skills to engage with the world around them.

This morning, ACT Chair of Trustees Helen Blachford gave evidence to the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee as part of its Modernising Elections inquiry.

Helen spoke about the importance of high-quality Citizenship education in preparing young people to participate confidently and effectively in our democracy, including in the context of votes at 16.

21,560 pupils sat GCSE Citizenship Studies in England this year - up 2.6% on 2025 and 3.9% on 2024.

This continued growth reflects young people’s interest in understanding society, politics and the justice system.

But the impact of Citizenship goes beyond the classroom. Research shows that studying GCSE Citizenship can strengthen young people’s political knowledge, interest and engagement, while active citizenship projects build the confidence and skills to make a difference in their communities.

With 16- and 17-year-olds set to gain the vote, high-quality Citizenship education has never been more important.

The Curriculum and Assessment Review recommended that media literacy should be better specified in both the primary and secondary Citizenship curriculum and the Government has accepted this recommendation.
