You can genuinely believe your health, family and relationship matter.

Work can still get the better part of you.

By the time you turn towards the people closest to you, the concentration has gone.

So has the patience that made you good company.

You are in the room while still replaying the meeting, carrying the decision or preparing for tomorrow.

High performers can give people access to them and assume that counts as attention.

Demanding seasons are real.

Strong relationships can carry them.

The trouble begins when a difficult season becomes the household norm.

Nobody raises it because everyone is expected to understand.

Eventually, the person waiting for more stops asking.

Presence does not require an entire evening.

It requires a clean decision to be there.

Choose one person this week and give them twenty minutes before work has taken everything useful.

Ask what has been occupying the most space for them lately.

Watch the flame.

It gets louder, hotter and more aggressive, trying to pull the ice into the fight.

The ice does not match it.

It releases only enough water to put the flame out, then remains standing.

That is the difference between reacting and responding.

A reaction spends whatever the moment provokes.

A response uses only what the moment requires.

At work, that might mean answering an accusation with one fact instead of a ten-minute defence.

At home, it might mean addressing the comment without turning it into a verdict on the entire relationship.

Restraint is not silence at any cost.

Sometimes the moment needs your voice. Sometimes it needs a boundary. Sometimes it needs no answer at all.

The skill is knowing which one, then refusing to give the moment more of you than it deserves.

Use your voice when it serves the situation.

Use silence when it does not.

Either way, remain intact.

The person who sounds cold may be the one getting you out of trouble.

The person holding everyone together may be closer to collapse than anyone realises.

Mondayโ€™s earthquake brought both into view.

A video went around our family.

We became convinced we could see a building that had collapsed.
It hadnโ€™t.

Our nervous systems had taken incomplete information and finished the picture for us.

Then I watched people respond in completely different ways.

Some became extraordinarily capable.

Some needed help.

Some offered comforting words.

Others skipped the words and started solving practical problems.

None of those responses told the whole story of who they were or how deeply they cared.

Under pressure, the behaviour in front of you is only half the information.

The other half is the nervous system producing it.

That matters in an emergency.

It also matters in a boardroom, a marriage, a family and every difficult conversation in which someone is not responding as you expected.

Before deciding what their response means, ask:

I was frightened on Monday.
I was also safe.
Many people were not.

Those who lost family members, homes, businesses and their sense of safety remain in our thoughts and prayers.

We honour the emergency services, rescue teams, healthcare workers, community leaders, neighbours, friends and families working tirelessly to find the missing, care for the injured, shelter those displaced and begin the long work of rebuilding.

Your brain predicts the future from what it has already lived through.

So when something feels threatening now, it reaches backwards for evidence.

The threat may be new.

The fear rarely is.

Every future fear is an old wound wearing a new suit.

And when that old threat takes the wheel, your judgment narrows.

You stop responding to what is happening and start protecting yourself from what happened before.

That changes how you lead.

It changes what you avoid.

And it follows you home.

This story asks a better question.

A man wanted to leave his wife, until his priest gave him one small thing to do every day. A month later, he never wanted to put her down.

So what changed? He stopped working on his wife and started building the partnership. He stopped counting what was missing, and fed what still worked.

Watch the full story above. Sixty seconds that could change how you see your marriage.

Every week in my newsletter, The Relationship Code, I give you the frameworks to rebuild the partnership, not just tolerate it. When the next room opens, youโ€™ll hear it there first.

He didnโ€™t do it by changing his family. He changed himself.

For years heโ€™d pushed the boy about focus, about effort. Nothing moved.

So he stopped pushing. And he landed his own discipline instead. The gym, scheduled, no negotiation. A routine he actually held.

A few weeks in, his son was training beside him.

He never gave a speech. He just became someone worth following.

My clients lead at work and parent at home. And every one of them wants the same thing: to stay the main influence in their childโ€™s life, and not lose that seat to a screen or the guy on the street corner.

And this is what I tell them. Youโ€™d better have your value proposition ready, and stronger than theirs. Because the street corner always has his. So does the screen. Whoeverโ€™s is strongest is the one your child follows.

You donโ€™t make yours stronger by insisting they knuckle down. You land your own discipline, your own routine, your own self-reputation.

Because in that energy, in that frequency, they only want to do the same.

I had to learn that twice.

When your nervous system never learned the difference, it can cost you money, opportunity and eventually the people closest to you.

For years, I couldnโ€™t sit still with the hard, boring work.
The accounts I hadnโ€™t done.
The strategy I kept avoiding.

So I would get in the car and drive.

I would even visit the auntie I normally dodged, as long as there was tea and biscuits.

Anything to escape the discomfort of being alone with the thing I needed to do.

Then I would hate myself a little more when I came back and found it still waiting.

I became an expert at kicking the can down the road.

I couldnโ€™t bear being on my own, let alone sitting on my own for hours.

I trained my nervous system to stay.
Fifteen minutes at first.
Then half a day.
Then half a month.

Eventually, I could spend half a year that way.

I got a lot done.

I moved the business and the team forward.
I had become very good at being alone.
Too good.

Then I had to unlearn what I had built around it.

I had to open myself back up to connection, receive support and enjoy my family without feeling I had to earn it first.

Solitude matters in the right hours and the right seasons.

Isolation does not have to become the price of getting results.

Loneliness had never been about the number of people in the room.

The real work was learning to sit with myself without interpreting the space as rejection.

Then noticing when my independence had become protection.

I needed a life that could hold the work, the results and the people I was building it all for.

Spend fifteen minutes alone with the thing you keep driving away from.
Learn to stay.

Then make sure your strength still leaves room for someone to reach you.

Youโ€™ve optimised everything else. Youโ€™ve never once audited this.

The biggest study of its kind followed 4,500 people for five years. The strongest predictor of their income and their promotions wasnโ€™t their talent or their hours. It was their home life.

Youโ€™re not one person at work and another at home. Youโ€™re one nervous system carrying both. When one leaks, the other pays.

So I spent a full day with a room of high performers on the one system nobody ever handed them the manual for. Five blind spots almost every one of them had.

The friction at home follows you into every meeting and eats the focus youโ€™re blaming on the workload. A steady home doesnโ€™t just feel good, it measurably frees you to perform. So audit it like every other input, and protect it like your best hours. This was never a soft problem, itโ€™s the infrastructure your leadership stands on.

You come home and run the play that won all day: spot the gap, fix the person. It runs a team beautifully. Turned on the person you share your life with, it does the opposite. People arenโ€™t projects. And the moment someone feels managed, they stop feeling chosen.

Always scanning for the better option, never fully in. Optionality made you rich, but here it does the opposite. It leaks the energy you need everywhere else. FOBO asks โ€œcould I do better?โ€ Your values ask โ€œis this the life Iโ€™m committed to?โ€ And people who relocate instead of renovate find the same walls in the next place.

At work you move before you feel ready, and let the confidence catch up. At home you do the opposite. You wait to feel it, and it never comes. Connection and desire arenโ€™t things you wait for. Theyโ€™re things you cause on purpose, the same way you built everything else.

You win by reading systems, markets, teams, incentives, data. This is a system too, with its own wiring and its own fuel. Nobody ever handed you the manual for it. Learn it, and it stops draining your bandwidth and starts feeding it.

What happens at home shows up in how you lead. In your focus, your energy, your judgment, your ability to connect.

I write about how to work with that every week in my newsletter, The Relationship Code.

The most confident person in the room almost didnโ€™t get up this morning.

At 5am, they were losing the argument with themselves. Again.

We treat confidence like something youโ€™re born with. Or something you earn by achieving more.

So high performers chase the next win, sure itโ€™ll finally feel like enough.

It never quite does.

Confidence isnโ€™t built, as such.

Itโ€™s the removal of inconfidence, through the everyday habits that build your self-reputation.

Your subconscious keeps the record.

Break a promise to yourself, and you lay down another layer of inconfidence.

Quiet evidence you canโ€™t quite be relied on.

Youโ€™re not becoming more confident.

Youโ€™re removing the inconfidence that was burying it.

No amount of affirmations outruns a track record of letting yourself down.

You said youโ€™d start at seven, so you start at seven.

You said youโ€™d have the hard conversation, so you have it.

None of it looks like much, and no oneโ€™s there to see it.

But each time you follow through, a layer comes off.

So you donโ€™t need more confidence.

You need a promise small enough to keep today. Then another. Then another.

Small still counts. It counts most when you stack it.

The promise nobody sees you keep builds the most trust of all.

At the end of each day, write down every promise you kept. Your mind holds on to the broken ones and quietly drops the rest, so you keep that record yourself.

Win the first two hours after you rise. A run of small promises kept before the day gets busy, and youโ€™re already in the frequency of courage.

This doesnโ€™t stay contained.

When a high performer isnโ€™t keeping their word to themselves and the results dry up, they project that fear straight onto the person closest to them.

The inconfidence spills onto their partner as scarcity and suspicion.

I see it constantly.

Keep the promises to yourself, and thereโ€™s simply less to project.

I break down implementable frameworks for this every week in my newsletter, The Relationship Code. When the next room opens, youโ€™ll hear it there first.

The easiest promise to break is the one you make to yourself.

Youโ€™ll move the world to keep your word to a client. Your own word tends to be the first thing to quietly slide.

This is me refusing to let that happen: in my gym kit for the session I wonโ€™t cancel, powering through the call Iโ€™d been dreading, with a deadline that wonโ€™t wait its turn.

Look closely at my wrist. That word is what I live by.
Self-reputation. Kept on the days built to break it.

When you sit down to boring, un-urgent work, your brain floods you with the urge to bounce to something more stimulating. Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor found that chemical surge flushes through the body in about ninety seconds. Everything after that, youโ€™re feeding with thought. So the pull to abandon the task and chase the next fire isnโ€™t permanent. Hold for ninety seconds, and it passes. Thatโ€™s the whole skill.

And itโ€™s the same skill that saves your relationship. Connection is slow, un-urgent work too, the kind that never spikes your chemistry and quietly goes cold while you chase something louder.

I teach high performers to do the unglamorous work that actually builds things, at work and at home.

The full breakdown is in the video below.
