MANAGING (MASS) TOURISM AT HERITAGE ATTRACTIONS (SITES AND MUSEUMS): HOW DO WE BRIDGE THE GAP?

My dear Colleagues,
after one year of silence due to work "overload" I am back to promote the new EAA BERN 2019 session on Heritage Management I am co-organising with esteemed colleagues from Italy and USA.
PLEASE SHARE IT AMONGST YOUR COLLEAGUES!!!
DEADLINE EXTENDED: 18/02/2019

Session Abstract:
Heritage – and its future – has become increasingly embedded with (mass) tourism, where it is now granted the importance of public outreach – to raise awareness around heritage and to generate income to preserve it for the present and future generations – the higher number of tourists visiting few leading sites and museums has highlighted what a great stress this is putting upon those very few sites and museums. However national, regional and local governments often praise those heritage attractions that are capable to increase – year by year – the number of visitors by stretching their visitor capacity to great deterioration of those very sites and museums official institutions are supposed to preserve. The message that comes through is visitor numbers are seen as measure of success: the higher the better, but at what cost to heritage?
We are facing a dilemma: heritage needs tourism – and well-managed mass tourism – to live on and be preserved as it generates the necessary funding upon which conservation relies on and, at the same time, it needs to find ways to develop damage control policies against tourism related threats (i.e. site erosion, cultural exploitation, unsupervised commercialisation, heritage trivialisation). Therefore this session is going to explore evidences of tourism threats at heritage attractions, what the established policies are to mitigate those threats and what may be done to reduce them while enhancing the visitor experience and uplifting income generation, as well as site management strategies and conservation policies, how tourism can be managed in an effective manner (potentially by involving local and national institutions, local communities, academic institutions, as well as local/regional/national businesses)
Contributors will address methodologies employed in various sites to manage tourism at heritage sites as well as present issues caused by tourism and solutions to transform tourism from a threat to the future of heritage to a valuable resource capable of enhancing financial sustainability and enabling preservation for future generations while maintaining exceptionally high standards of visitor experience.

THE PROJECT BRIEFLY: The impressive remains of the Roman city of Hurvinum Ortense can still be seen near the village of Collemancio di Cannara on La Pieve hill. The current state of research suggests that the first monumentalization phase of this area dates back to the second half of the III century b.C.; it seems reasonable to suppose that the Tripartite Tuscan temple must date to that century. Hurvinum Ortense became a municipium after the Social War (90 b.C.). First signs of urbanization date back to that period, as evidenced by the remains of an ancient road near the temple. The thermal complex is likely to date from the II century a.D. and it suggests a certain vitality of this municipium during the Imperial Age.Our project is part of the research and enhancement of archaeological heritage programme of the Comune of Cannara, which is run in cooperation with the Archaeological Superintendency of Umbria; it is also part of the archaeological research and training programme run by the University of Perugia. Our excavation programme aims to learn about the town and its evolution, to reconstruct life way of life and to provide useful information about the most important buidings, both private and public ones.
