When students ask me what really determines success in investment banking, they expect me to say Excel, DCF, LBO.

But the truth?
The analysts who rise the fastest all share five foundational skills — and none of them are optional 👇

1️⃣ Teamwork that actually works
In M&A, you win as a team and you lose as a team.
The analysts who thrive are the ones who support the deal, not just their own slide.

"How Many Smartphones Are There in the UK?"

Interviewers often test a candidate's ability to think critically and structure a logical response.

Here’s a quick framework to help you shine:

📱Start with the population: The UK has ~70M people.

📱Estimate users: Assume 85% of people (aged 13–80) own smartphones.

📱Initial calculation: Multiply 70M by 85%, giving ~56M smartphones.

📱Multiple devices: Assume 30% own 2 phones (30% * 56M = ~17M).

📱Final estimate: 56M + 17M = 73M smartphones.

💡 Actual answer: 72M smartphones.

The key isn't getting the exact number but providing a logical estimate.
If your answer is within a 10–15% margin of error, you'll score top marks!
