From City Year Mentor to News Presenter! ๐ค
Back in June 28th mentors across City Year UK travelled down to Sky's Osterley campus in London for their Industry Exploration Day. ๐
As part of the day that Sky UP put together, our mentors fully immersed themselves in the environment, getting the chance to team up to create their own mock newsreels with the Sky Up Academy experience. ๐คฒ
City Year mentors fully exercised their creative minds, taking different roles (whether behind the camera or in front of it) to produce these lifelike newsreels. ๐ฌ๐ฅ
Weโre super excited to share the results! Watch the video to see what our mentors put together. โญ

International Youth Day โญ
Today is International Youth Day, a UN initiative aiming to raise awareness around the power and contributions of the youth in society. This yearโs theme is centered around digital innovation: namely, how young minds are harnessing technology to create sustainable solutions for our world's most pressing challenges. ๐
For us, the youth is at the heart of what we do. Whether itโs helping to unlock the potential of young leaders, or providing opportunities for the younger generation, we believe that supporting young people can help contribute to a better society for all. ๐

City Year Mentor Journeys ๐
City Year Mentor Journeys is a short video series showcasing the transformative journeys that our mentors undergo during their year of service with us. โญ
We want to highlight the incredible achievements of the young leaders who dedicate their time to tackling educational inequality, by demonstrating their incredible desire for growth and making an impact. ๐ฅ
Today we wanted to draw attention to Mabinty, one of our mentors who recently graduated. At the start of her City Year journey, Mabinty spoke about her mum in her Red Jacket Dedication. Mabinty referenced her mum as an aspirational influence, given how she supported her to build her confidence, take bigger opportunities, and push herself out of her comfort zoneโsomething that Mabinty felt she wanted to improve on, which motivated her to join Year UK.
At her graduation, Mabinty reflected upon how she fully embraced all the opportunities and challenges to improve at City Year UK. Whether it was building the courage to capably speak in front of a big audience, or building the confidence to prepare for the working worldโMabintyโs journey reflects her incredible aspirational attitude through the way she pushed herself to grow. ๐

Today weโre showcasing Hannhaโs Journey. Before starting as a City Year Mentor, Hannah dedicated her Red Jacket to her GCSE English teacher. Hannhaโs teacher made an impact on her by giving her extra support when she thought sheโd fail her exam. Towards the end of the programme at her graduation, Hannha shared the impact she had made on the young students she had worked with by joyfully recounting the positive change she had seen witnessed through her mentoring.
Through mentoring young people with City Year UK, Hannah was able to embody the very positive influence of change that she had received during her time in education, for someone else. ๐

Industry Exploration Day with Vertex Pharmaceuticals. ๐
In collaboration with one of our partners, the Vertex Foundation (Vertex Pharmaceuticals), City Year Mentors recently attended a fascinating Industry Exploration Day at their London offices ๐.
City Year mentors had the opportunity to visit the Vertex offices, giving them a comprehensive window into the companyโs culture and the work they do to support people living with serious diseases. Vertex staff spent time with our mentors providing career tips and guidance, helping cultivate their future career aspirations. Our mentors attended a fantastic session on medical research and technology which resulted in an incredibly engaging and enriching day for our mentors! ๐
Industry Exploration Days form part of our leadership development programme, designed to help City Year mentors visit workplaces to break barriers and stereotypes. Itโs an opportunity to interact, learn, and be inspired by different career pathways. ๐
A huge thank you to the Vertex Foundation for providing this opportunity to our mentors and for their continued commitment to their professional development!

Today is World Youth Skills Day. Started in 2014 by the UN, celebrates the importance of equipping young people with the skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship. ๐๐ ๏ธ๐ผ
We wanted to draw attention to this important day, as equipping young people with the right skills is crucial to us for achieving our goalsโ reducing education inequality and supporting the development of young people furthest from opportunity. ๐
Equipping young people with the right skills is implemented in our work in schools through our mentor's continuous social and academic support. We also work closely with Skills Builder Partnership to ensure that every young person who mentors with City Year UK leaves feeling prepared for their future ahead and is equipped with the required to excel. ๐ฏ
