A significant change for families with children in academies came into force this month. Under the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act, academies in England must now follow the national curriculum and national teacher pay and conditions, and newly hired teachers must hold qualified teacher status or be working towards it.
For most families, the school day will look much the same this term. The real shift is that a child's access to core subjects such as science, history, geography and languages is now protected by law, whatever type of school they attend. It also makes the core curriculum more consistent if a family moves house or changes school partway through.
A fuller curriculum overhaul is still expected from 2028. For now, GCSE and A-level specifications are unaffected.
