Romanian Cultural Institute in London We promote Romanian culture and artists in the United Kingdom. These four principal functions are executed in a whole series of activities.

We are keen to build partnerships with British cultural organisations and support our vibrant community in Great Britain. The Romanian Cultural Institute in London, or ICR/RCI London, is part of a global network of cultural institutes and together we make up Romania’s main arm of cultural diplomacy. We act on several levels: as a diplomatic mission, cultural management unit, artistic and PR agency and as a centre for research and documentation. As a diplomatic mission, we are in charge of cultural and public diplomacy projects, managed by a dedicated team of professionals. We are also responsible for creating long-term partnerships between Romanian and British individuals and institutions. We devote equal energy to initiatives about Britain for Romanians and we collaborate with Romanians in the UK on community projects.

Alexandra Păceană is a Romanian classical guitarist and composer currently completing a Master of Music at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studies classical guitar with Michael Lewin and Stephen Goss, and composition with Louise Drewett. Born in south-western Romania, she began studying music at the age of six and took up the guitar at eleven. Just one year later, she made her solo recital debut at the Oltenia Philharmonic in Craiova. During her school years, she won numerous prizes at national and international competitions before moving to London in 2020 to continue her musical education. In 2023, Alexandra graduated with First-Class Honours from Middlesex University London and was awarded the Turton Prize for Music in recognition of her outstanding achievements. As a performer, her repertoire ranges from Baroque masterpieces to contemporary works, reflecting her versatility and curiosity as a musician. Alongside performance, she is an active composer. Her Master's research explores the musical traditions of south-western Romania during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, to bring this largely unexplored repertoire into the classical guitar tradition through new arrangements and compositions. Alongside her performing career, Alexandra has a strong interest in teaching, literature, music promotion, and contemporary music. She hopes to combine these passions by developing an international career as a performer and composer while establishing her own music school.

We look forward to opening our 20th season of the Enescu Concerts Series with talented guitarist Alexandra Păceană, performing with The Valegro Quartet.

🎷 Amphitrio – “Traces” UK Tour 🇬🇧

Romanian contemporary jazz band Amphitrio are bringing their new EP, "Traces", to the UK!

Released on 1 September, "Traces" features original music by Andrei Petrache, inspired by the music of George Enescu. Rather than a conventional tribute, the EP transforms Enescu’s musical themes, harmonies and gestures through improvisation, motivic development, and acoustic and electronic textures, creating a distinctive contemporary jazz language.

Following the release, Amphitrio will embark on an international tour with 10 UK performances. Discover "Traces live" and experience the sounds of this exciting jazz trio!

🎶 We’re delighted to open the 20th season of the Enescu Concerts Series with a special concert featuring British-Romanian classical guitarist Alexandra Păceană, joined by The Valegro Quartet - Takanori Okamoto and Sophia Molina (violins), Haruka Makino (viola) and Doraly Gill (cello).

The recital marks a premiere collaboration between the Romanian Cultural Institute in London and the London Chamber Music Society, whose remarkable tradition of chamber music-making in London dates back to the 1880s.

The programme brings together the rich expressive colours of plucked and bowed strings, featuring Mozart, striking new arrangements of J.S. Bach and George Enescu, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s much-loved Guitar Quintet, composed for Andrés Segovia in 1950.

Today, on Romanian Language Day, we celebrate Romanian as a language of identity, memory and belonging - and the special ways it connects generations.

CRISTINA SCHEK is a Romanian-British visual artist, photographer and digital artist based in London. Her practice sits at the intersection of photography, surrealism and visual storytelling. Using photography as a starting point, she constructs imaginary worlds by layering, manipulating and digitally reassembling images. Her visual language is informed by surrealist aesthetics and the work of the Old Masters. Her art has been presented in exhibitions and international art fairs across the UK, Europe and the United States, and she has received numerous awards for her practice. Schek is represented by Cynthia Corbett Gallery in London, and her work has been exhibited in museum contexts and through leading auction houses, as well as acquired for private collections internationally. By combining photography with digital intervention, Schek creates images that are at once poetic and enigmatic, exploring the relationship between nature, imagination and identity.

On Saturday 19 September at 2pm, Cristina Schek’s striking 'Fern Girl' will be unveiled in its impressive large-scale form at Turnham Green Terrace. This exciting moment marks her successful return to W4th Plinth, one of West London’s most visible and celebrated public art projects.

We were delighted to be part of a wonderful evening at The Vortex Jazz Club last night, celebrating the music of Sorin Zlat Trio. 🎶 With a full house and an incredible atmosphere, it was a real pleasure to share this memorable concert with London’s jazz audience.

Missed last night’s concert? There’s more to come! The Sorin Zlat Trio will perform tomorrow evening at The Cowshed Jazz Club, together with vocalist Mihaela Alexa. And they’ll be back in London for a concert at PizzaExpress Live Soho later this year - more details to follow shortly!

To celebrate the UK release of the award-winning The Yellow Tie, a film bringing the extraordinary story and destiny of Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache to the big screen, we invite you to join us for a special evening with the creative minds behind this remarkable international project.

We are delighted to welcome, to the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, director Serge Ioan Celebidachi, son of the legendary musician, and producer Adela Vrînceanu Celebidachi, in conversation with filmmaker Mara Cracaleanu.

The evening will offer a unique glimpse behind the scenes of this ambitious cinematic journey, exploring the personal stories, creative choices and challenges involved in bringing Sergiu Celibidache’s remarkable life to the screen. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

The event is organised in partnership with the Embassy of Romania in the United Kingdom and Aqua Carpatica, with opening remarks by H.E. Laura Popescu, Ambassador of Romania to the UK.
