Living Systems Residency Pop-Up Exhibition
Modern Fertility
By Cindy Lin
As the culmination of her Living Systems Residency, Cindy Lin presents Modern Fertility—an ongoing interdisciplinary project examining the entangled relations between technology, gender, and reproductive futures.
A Taiwanese American lens-based artist and researcher, Lin works across photography, installation, and computational media to explore how bodies, data, and technological systems co-produce contemporary experiences of identity and potential motherhood.
Through still life photography, personal archives, interviews, and AI-generated imagery, Modern Fertility critically examines the commodification of the female body within the global fertility industry, revealing how predictive systems, demographic data, and algorithmic infrastructures shape reproductive timelines through logics of optimization, desirability, and risk.
Works such as Baby Lottery expose biases embedded within generative image systems, where algorithmic outputs reproduce and amplify Western-centric aesthetic standards. By integrating machine learning with materially grounded processes of collage, photography, and object-making, Lin destabilizes the boundaries between the computational and the corporeal.
Rather than presenting technology as neutral, Modern Fertility foregrounds its active role in reconfiguring bodies, identities, and futures.
