Last week Year 1 children visited Fort Nelson to support their learning of Florence Nightingale and her impact on improving hospitals and patient care.
Although Florence Nightingale herself never worked at Fort Nelson, this trip offered rich opportunities for children to explore:
- 🏥 Conditions similar to those in the Crimean War, helping them imagine what hospitals were like before Nightingale’s reforms
- 🔦 Life in the past, including how soldiers lived, worked, and were treated when injured
- 🧺 The importance of cleanliness, organisation, and care, key themes in Nightingale’s story
- 🧠 Hands‑on learning, allowing children to connect historical ideas with real spaces and artefacts

🎉 We’re so proud of everyone at Moorings Way Infant School after Ofsted recognised our commitment to transforming the life chances of our pupils!
💛 Inspectors discovered pupils feel safe, happy and excited to come to school each day, thanks to our dedicated staff who place their wellbeing at the centre of everything we do.
Highlights from the report include:
✅ High-quality, early years provision.
✅ A ‘strong standard’ for inclusion, personal development and wellbeing.
✅ High levels of attendance; with tailored support for pupils who need extra help.
✅ Leaders have a clear, shared vision to help every child ‘be their best self’.
Executive Headteacher Mrs S. Paine said: “This reflects the inclusive, welcoming environment we have for our pupils and our dedicated staff who ensure the school is a safe, secure place to learn”.

At the end of last term we waved a big goodbye to Mrs Vonk as she heads off on her next adventure! We’re all a bit sad to see her go — she’s been such a brilliant head teacher at Moorings Way and Meon Infant School — but we’re also super excited for everything she’s going to do next.
Thank you for all the smiles, stories, and support. We’ll miss you lots, Mrs Vonk, and we hope your new journey is as amazing as you are!
