International Academic Projects (IAP) is an international educational charity organising courses in art conservation and related subjects.

The majority of the professional development courses in conservation and museum studies take place in Britain and Europe from June through August. The duration of these courses, led by international experts, varies between one and five days. The courses often address very particular types of knowledge or skills. IAP also co-operates with institutions and colleagues abroad to provide training courses for museum, conservation and archaeological personnel. Courses outside of the UK have been held in Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Australia, the USA, Austria, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Ireland, Switzerland, France, Finland and Malta. IAP is particularly interested in bringing some of its conservation training courses to the countries of Latin America. We are happy to discuss initiatives with interested parties.

This presentation discusses the use of ErYAG lasers to remove aged bronze paint repairs from gilded surfaces. Gerry Alabone will address the common conservation challenge of removing darkened old bronze paint repairs from sensitive oil gilded surfaces which have similar solubility parameters, thus allowing treatments to be carried out that would not be possible with the use of solvents alone.

Steve Koob (who sadly died in June) had keenly anticipated attending next week’s IIC conference in Ghent, especially as he had fond memories of attending an ICCROM conference (on on-site conservation) in Ghent in 1985 and was looking forward to catching up with friends and colleagues – some of whom had also attended that 1985 conference.

Some of us have arranged to meet informally to raise a glass in Steve’s memory and would be very happy to be joined by friends and acquaintances of Steve.

Our next virtual seminar examines how we can scientifically study a leather object and its deterioration. Marysia Tarnowska will cover various methods to learn about properties of leather, chemical structures of different animal skins and the influence of tanning methods, as well as health and safety.

On 16th June Patrick Kelley and David Pinniger will discuss different types of termites, prevention and inspection. Termites can cause extensive damage to structures and objects, and they are expanding with the impact of global warming.

On 17th April we had the great pleasure to visit Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire with a small group of conservators. Lizzie Wooley (Opus Conservation) is leading the conservation of the wall paintings in the Great Hall and the Saloon, part of their current roof project. She talked to us about the history and analytics of the paintings and how they are choosing to conserve them. We had the great honour to go up the scaffolding inside and view the wall paintings from up close. It was a very unique experience and we were all very grateful to be shown around. A fascinating process involving many different parties working together including also Donald Insall Associates and Frank W. Haywood & Associates.
