"You always seem happy - how come?" A short catch-up today. I'm lucky to feel happy most of the time but it's also a conscious decision...

..The question I was asked was simply, "Hello again. How are you?" I forget my exact reply but remember clearly the response to my reply.

"You always seem happy - how come?"

I believe each response I give, each interaction I have in life leaves an impression on those I meet and on myself.

In reality, I was asked how I am but that's not the real question. It's just a form of the kind of social dance we all undertake in daily life.

It's not a therapy session. A deep-dive into my feelings, my trials, tribulations, hopes and fears.

It's a bit of social engagement and I'd like to think the person walks away feeling positive about our interaction.

So, you lied, Paul? No. It was true insofar as yes, I feel happy today and most other days.

The weather, the economy, other people don't get me down in the way they often seem to do for others.

I decided long ago that factors beyond my control should not dictate how I feel day-to-day.

But, also, it's important to understand the context of any interaction, the meaning of words beyond the actual words.

Every time I respond positively to any question, it helps strengthen my feeling of happiness.

Every time I respond negatively, take the chance to moan, to lament, to complain - that strengthens only negative feelings. In time, they build.

This is not living a lie. It's not happy clappy head-in-the-clouds nonsense.

This is making conscious choices about daily interactions that make me - and, I hope, those people around me - feel slightly better with each interaction.

It works for me - in life. In business. And, especially, in sales.

If you're not yet sold on the idea, check how you feel the next time you ask someone how they are and you get the full sharing of their worldly woes.

Happiness is a choice and sharing it helps others.

At age 32, I went from earning practically nothing to more than £100k a year. It took me 4 years; I can help you do it in 2. How?...

Well, there are no prizes for guessing that one key step is to learn how to sell well.

Sales is a skill. You can learn how to do it. We all can (though we don't all end up identically good - there are too many variables for that).

But there are 2 other elements that make a huge difference and, without them, you'll struggle even if you learn to sell.

Full details in 70 seconds below. Watch to the end for the final tip.

4th December 2000 was the day that changed Paul Owen's life.

23 years later to the day on 4th December 2023, we have an exciting announcement…

Today, we are launching the True Sales Academy, our online sales training platform.

Our aim is to help 1 million people sell successfully with honesty and integrity.

We are so excited to help more people sell well as we know how life changing it can be.

Back in December 2000, aged 32, he was broke. Earning £8k a year, with 9 credit cards and a total of £27k of unsecured debt.

He was living on a mate’s floor and couldn’t see a way out. He'd also fallen in love in the summer of 2000 and lost the love of his life.

For the first time, he started selling. Selling himself to get a break.

He got it and started on 4th December 2000. That job changed everything.

More details in the video below.

How do you help a salesperson to improve?…

The assumption is that the answer should involve a change of some sort.

Not always.

Here’s 1 minute with an alternative view.

Why do you think you’re the best person / the right person to do what you do?

I heard this question today and turned it on myself.

I want to show everyone the benefits of learning to sell and help them to do it well.

It makes huge changes to our business lives and our personal lives.

So what makes me the best person, the right person to teach people how to sell well?

My answer in the video below. A little over 2 minutes.

“Are you a cold weather person? Or a hot weather person?” As the UK clocks go back and winter is very much here, it’s a well-timed question. It also provides an interesting link to sales mindset…

So, I heard the question about cold or hot weather person on my walk to work this morning.

The question was posed by Ryan Holiday, bestselling author of several books on Stoicism, in his interview with Steve Bartlett on The Diary Of A CEO.

Ryan’s answer? “I’m a dress-for-the-weather person.”

As someone who’s never understood why people allow the weather to affect them, I loved this.

The point is that you can’t control the weather so why let it affect your mood? A very Stoic view.

The link to sales?

You can’t control the economy.

You can’t control what other companies do in your market.

You can’t control what your clients think or do (though you can, of course, influence this).

All you can do is to work as productively as possible in whatever environment you find yourself in.

Hot weather? Cold weather? Mild, non-descript weather? Dress to suit.

Growing economy? Shrinking economy? Stagnant economy? Act to suit.

Stop whining. Stop wishing.

See the world as it is right now and find a way to work in it as successfully as you can.

Happy selling

The Mis-Selling of Sales Training: It drives me mad. Why do they do it? And why do people buy it?!...

Because it works. The selling of it, that is. Not the delivery.

Here’s my thoughts on the pursuit of unbelievably quick growth in 2 minutes of video.

Happy Friday folks!

Can you make yourself more likeable? And, if you can, does it matter in sales?…

In this short video, I answer both questions based around the many years of research into likeability done by social scientists.

If you think that likeability either happens or doesn’t, think again.

You’re about to find out that there are 5 factors that foster likeability.

And each of them is under your control.

Enjoy!

What is the No. 1 benefit of asking questions in sales conversations? In fact, forget sales: in all conversations?...

Let's face it, most people are bad listeners. In life, that can make us dull and self-indulgent. In sales, it's the quickest route to failure.

Of course there are many different benefits to asking questions in sales conversations:

1. Finding need (and hopefully being able to meet it)
2. Learning their language (we all speak our native language differently)
3. Controlling the conversation (questions are conversational signposts)
4. Making things easier for us (giving us space to listen rather than talk)
5. Making them think (critical for a productive conversation for all).

But one benefit is more important than the rest. And it's the one that's most often overlooked: this video gives you the answer in under 2 minutes.

Let me know what you think - are we (mostly) bad listeners? Any tips you have to stop yourself talking and taking time to listen?
