Most corporate students don't need German. Their counterparts in Frankfurt or Zurich speak good English and are happy to use it. Meetings can run perfectly well without a word of German being spoken. That is exactly what makes learning it mean something. It isn't a necessity, it's a choice, and it is read as one. People notice that you bothered (so will your in-laws).
Translation software has made the documents straightforward. What it doesn't touch is the aside, the pause before an answer, or the remark made in German to a colleague across the table.

Why do English speakers find German communication so jarring at first?

Because German is heard much closer to the words actually used. The softeners, the apologies, the "sorry, could I just ask" — all the padding that keeps an English conversation running smoothly — do not do the same work in German.

When do you say Sie, and when du? It's the decision German learners dread most — get it wrong and you risk being over-familiar with a client or oddly stiff with a friend.
The good news: if you can hear the difference between "How are you, mate?" and "How are you, Sir?", you already have the instinct German asks for.
