Year one Palau forest school.
Palau class had a lovely afternoon at forest school.
We explored the new site, then looked at autumn leaves and made leaf rubbings with crayons and autumn pictures using chalk.
There was also lots of focused mud painting and engineering going on with how to position the pipes so the conkers would roll.

Year One Science - Taste
Year One investigated the sense of taste this week by trying foods that have the five basic tastes: sweet, salty, bitter, sour and savoury. We enjoyed trying the sour lemons!
Well done Scotland Class
Congratulations to the children in Scotland Class for filling your marble jar - for the second time! As a reward some of the children enjoyed a dance party whilst others got arty.

This week we have started mastering number in year 1. The children have been looking at the Rekenrek and discovering all the different parts. We have discovered that the top row has 5 red beads and five white beads and this makes ten. The children have enjoyed using the Rekenrek to find number bonds to 5.

Year 3 are Authors!
The year 3 children have just completed their first independent write of the year. We have been reading the brilliant book 'The True Story of the Three Little Pigs' by Jon Scieszka. The children wrote an alternative version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They all worked very hard and, as you can see below, we have some budding authors in our midst.

Nursery have been learning Nursery rhymes and counting songs and have enjoyed participating in related activities.

Egypt Class have had a wonderful afternoon in the forest. We were very lucky with the weather.
We loved learning about the Kelly Kettle and fire safety. We then enjoyed hot chocolate from the Kelly. The children were very sensible around the fire zone and were very careful and respectful.
The children enjoyed collecting and looking at bugs and also making little bug houses with leaves and food for the bugs.
Well done Egypt class!

Well done to the Mathletics winners in China this week.

Year 5 Parachute Experiment!
In science this half term, Year 5 have been learning about forces. Over the past two science lessons Year 5 have planned, carried out and evaluated their own experiment on air resistance. They looked at how surface area effects the time taken for the parachute to fall to the ground. Year 5 concluded that the parachute's surface area does effect the time taken to fall to the ground (even with some anomalous data!) Well done Year 5!!

During today's maths lesson, year 6 were exploring the difference between squared numbers and cubed numbers. They used manipulatives during a class investigation to find the answer to 3x3x3 as well as exploring how the number 10 can not be a cubed number.
Y6 Music
Y6 children have successfully completed a unit about rhythm and beat. They enjoyed various rhythmic activities, especially dancing with drumsticks. Watch Malaysia class performing simple rhythm patterns.

Year 3 were very lucky to be visited by Theo, our reading dog, today. The children loved reading to him and, as you can see, Theo loved it too!

Special Menu - Tomorrow - Thursday 5th October 2023

Today Year 5 joined a zoom meeting with the author of 'Brilliant Black British History' who told us all about her new book. She shared some fascinating stories about her research and discoveries about Black history and Britain and even allowed us to ask her questions!

Meet our Ks1 members of pupil parliament .We know you are going to work hard to ensure the children have their say in the running of Mead school.

Well done to the KS1 stars of the week.We are very proud of you.
Year 3 have been having conversations with their friends in Spanish. Last week they learnt how to say 'How are you?' and reply. They also learnt how to ask someone their name and respond. Well done Year 3.

Year 3 Mathletics Superstars!
A huge well done to the children below for completing lots of activities on Mathletics. We are super proud of you all.

Kenya Class loved their first Forest School session. Some of us loved looking for bugs and investigating them in the bug pots, others loved climbing the trees and others learnt how to tie knots to make a fishing rod and bow&arrow.
Well done Kenya for being so resilient in the forest!🌿

Well done to this weeks Mathletics winners in China.

On Friday 13th October children in Reception will be participating in a 'Marvellous Me' Day. This half term in Reception we have been thinking about all of the things that make us marvellous. We have been discussing our families, our likes and dislikes and also our similarities and differences with our classmates. What a better way to round up our topic then to hold a WOW Day for us to celebrate all of the things that make us, us? On this day, the children in Reception can come to school wearing clothes of their choice. This could be their favourite outfit, clothes in their favourite colour or clothes that represent something about them. Please discuss this with your child so that they are able to share with us in school why they have chosen their outfit.

Newsletter - 29/09/23
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been another action packed week at Mead. Year 5 have been developing their bike ability and gaining more confidence to ride their bikes safely. We also welcomed Rosie, our schools Read, Write, Inc Trainer into school this week and she was astonished by how well the children have settled into their phonics groups, including our new reception classes. She couldn’t believe the progress the children had made since she last saw them in the Summer term. Well done everyone!
It has been wonderful to see so many children scooting to school, we have noticed how busy the KS1 bike and scooter park is getting, so please make sure you park up safely. We are looking into getting another scooter park so that there is space for everyone. Please make sure that you walk with your scooter as you come on to the school grounds so that everyone stays safe.

Holiday Requests
We have seen an increase in Leave of Absence requests for holidays. The DfE and Local Authority have made it clear that we are no longer able to grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Mead Primary School will consider each request for leave of absence carefully and individually to determine its authorisation, but please remember leave is not an entitlement. Requests should be made by the parent/carer and forwarded to the Headteacher before the period of absence. Please note that all absences of 4 days or more may require medical evidence (eg copies of prescription, hospital letters, medication, etc.). Any unauthorised periods of absence may result in a penalty notice of £60 (which will increase to £120 if not paid within 21 days) for each child and imposed on each parent.

New Zealand class enjoyed exploring the new space at forest school today.
They enjoyed the revamped mud kitchen which now has seating and the new balancing area. We also looked at the new log pile and are looking forward to seeing if there are any new residents in the coming weeks.
There was lots of digging and squishing too. One of their favourite activities was swinging on the hammock and swing.

On Friday 13th October at 2.30pm we would like to invite you to a Read, Write Inc workshop. As your child embarks on their Read, Write Inc journey we would like to provide you with further information on how we teach your child/ren letter sounds, show you what a phonic lesson looks like and provide you with information on how best to support your child/ren at home.
We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.
In year 2 we have been looking at number bonds and becoming masters of number and gaining confidence when talking about numbers between 5 and 10.

The last two weeks we have been looking at the numbers 0-10. We have been representing numbers on ten frames, finding one more and one less and counting forwards and backwards from any given number. We have used a range of resources including counters, ten frames, number tracks, dice and cubes. Year 1 have enjoyed exploring numbers!

Year 3 have been looking at the place value of 3-digit numbers during our maths lessons. We have used base 10 and place value counters to support our learning.
We have been representing 3-digit numbers; partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and ones as well as finding 1, 10 and 100 more and less of a given number.
Year 3 learning Spanish.
The Year 3 children only started learning Spanish last week and they are already having conversations with their friends.
