Should children be separated into different sets based on their maths ability at school? 📚

Last week I had the privilege of speaking at the House of Lords Numeracy for Life Select Committee, alongside CEO Sam Simms and trustee Lynne McClure.

The objective of the session was to provide evidence on ways in which we can improve the numeracy and number confidence of the nation, starting at one of the earliest possible moments in a child's life - in the classroom.

During the session when asked about why I think pupils get left behind in maths at school, I pointed to my own experience of falling into a lower set during secondary school, and the negative effect this had on my number confidence at the time.

Thankfully I use maths every day in my job as an educator, and I have fallen back in love with the subject.
