Brandon Hopkins, one of our Product Design students, has reached the national final of the Design Innovation in Plastics 2024 award competition. 👏👏👏

For his award entry, he designed a salt-water powered data buoy to collect important information including water quality, weather conditions and the impact of climate change.

Brandon said: “It’s an honour to be recognised for my oceanographic measuring device. I designed the salt-water-battery powered data buoy to firstly address the challenges of the data buoy market, namely the increasing need for autonomous data buoys that require less maintenance, as well as to address the very real issues that solar-panel/ lithium-ion battery powered data buoys create, which is surprisingly a lot. This is the first data buoy of its kind, powered entirely by salt-water batteries, and I very much look forward to the results.”

Good luck to Brandon at today’s award ceremony! 🤞🤞🤞

LSBU Film and Television Practice students have had their debut short film recognised by BAFTA as part of their prestigious Yugo BAFTA Student Awards!

‘Some Hairs Never Fall’, co-directed by Romina Osterling and Luke Reid, is a documentary about seven women wigmakers in the highlands of Peru. A mysterious and captivating aesthetic, mixing sublime natural landscapes with mysterious imagery and sound, creates an intriguing atmosphere of mysticism whilst unveiling the bigger subject of feminist empowerment and independence.

The Yugo BAFTA Student Awards is an annual event celebrating the works of the next generation of talented and innovative storytellers from around the globe.

Romina Osterling, film student and co-director of ‘Some Hairs Never Fall’, said: “As a woman director, I am more than ecstatic that my feminist film is being rendered valuable by the film industry. It is my dream and passion to shed light on stories that make my heart feel tender. I am beyond grateful for the lessons and support I’ve received from my lecturers and fellow students – I wouldn’t have had the stamina to complete this project without them.”

Matthew Hawkins, Film Practice Course Leader, said: “’Some Hairs Never Fall’ is an ambitious, political and personal film that is beautifully shot and scored. This BAFTA recognition is a testament to the students' hard work and courage which we are so proud of. Once again, LSBU film students are competing against the best film schools in the world for the most prestigious prizes in the industry.”
