🌹 Sweet Child O’ Mine Bass Arrangement (PT2)

🎸 This is the second part to the deceivingly busy intro where the bass sets more of the tone for the rest of the song by landing into its normal lower octave range.

♥️ For our 1-1 lesson, we talked about knowing the foundations to what the bassist used to create a more interesting line. So again, we started with the root notes of the chord progression (I IV V, Db, B, and Gb) but then due to the whacky half step tuning of GnR (and other hair rockers), we’ve moved the play one fret down so we don’t have to muck around with tuning for one song in the setlist.

🌹 This second part of the intro has two of possibly the biggest finger patterns for guitar and bass EVER so is mega useful in understanding other songs, composition work and exercises.

Made another playlist! It’s all about ‘The One’ - the absolute must for musicians and defo all drummers. I had a lot of fun making this, finding songs that use displacement (Prodigy is a fab example) or keep misplays between musicians in (All Along the Watchtower?).

As always, I’ve tried to jump across all sorts of genres - even though there’s admittedly a lot of rock - as this isn’t a style-specific thing. All of the songs (esp intros) are great tests on your musical ear.

NB. This isn’t to do with time signature (counting in 2s, 4s, 3s, etc) or polyrhythms (weird overlapping phrases) but is to do with changing the feel of a riff by starting in what feels like the wrong place.

I absolutely love these sorts of things where your sense of understanding is turned upside down. 🙃 And even though we’re unlikely to use it and apply it in any lessons, it’s a fab thing to try unpick.

Happy listening! 🎧

💀 What a happy little song this is, really. Who would’ve guessed from the artwork. 😜

💀 Guns n Roses - Sweet Child O’ Mine bass arrangement for private 1-1 student.

💀 There’s lots of disclaimers here for this one:

- moved positioning to help reinforce learning of the major scale
- original is with the 80s / 90s rock half step tuning, meaning that to play along with the track you’ll either need to retune each time or move the patterning down a fret to Db, Cb and Gb.
- In lesson time, I’ve suggested it’s more important to inform playing by playing the major scale figure pattern on the root note (as this is what the bassist used to inform his own work).

💀 A great example where a traditional, commonly used chord progression is spiced up by scale work and lots of expressive movement.
