It is with great sadness that we learned today of the passing of Dr Michael Schachter. As well as being the Honorary President of our Association, he was a beloved mentor, confidant and friend to all of us in the ICSM community.

Mike, we shall miss you. May your soul rest in peace.

Dear All,

We are aware of the announcement by Imperial College made this morning regarding the St Mary’s campus

We understand that many alumni may be alarmed or concerned about what is going on with the future (and history) of our Medical School. As your Alumni Association we will raise any issues that you feel haven’t been considered or that you feel need to be made with regards maintaining our shared history and also ensuring future Students have access to adequate facilities.

If you would like to send an email outlining your thoughts, please do so to [email protected]

We will liaise with both ICSMSU and SMHA and share your views with College to ensure that our students (and future colleagues) get the most out of this situation.

Today as we are looking at mindfulness. A lot of people have pledged to put aside time for mindfulness or meditation including our Vice-Chair for Reps . Many people struggle to focus and practice mindfulness- Headspace is an evidence based app that works to guide people through this process and if you have a student Spotify premium account, you get free access to Headspace!! If not, mindfulness is an individual practice so even just be putting a few minutes aside each day to breathe and focus on yourself can be incredibly refreshing.

Dear New F1 colleagues,

Congratulations on your first month as a doctor.

You’ve put in lots of hard work and really earned this, and if all your year are like those I know in it, you will be brilliant doctors.

Remember:
1) Some days will be hard, sometimes the system or unremitting disease will try to break you but sometimes you will do or see things most people can never imagine and every day you will have made a difference. We’ve all been there. If you are having one of the hard times, we know it can be terrible and one can feel alone, but you are not.

2) Ask for help if you are struggling. If locally that’s hard to find and your supervisors aren’t supportive and your friends are far away, we will always lend a sympathetic ear.

3) Look after yourselves. That means striving to have acceptable breaks, leaving on time, eating, drinking and don’t give up your life outside medicine.

4) If you haven’t already, help us support the next few years’ future doctors by joining us. More of our money than ever goes on supporting students in year 5-6, but unless people sign up each year we will struggle to increase what we can give (currently £11,000 spent on students per year, and the same again saved for a rainy day for ICSM).

To sign up, and get your Phoenix Doctor Name Badge ready for Graduation (or to collect any time from then), please click here- http://icsmalumni.org/join/

It takes 2 minutes but it will help so many people over the years (costing 2 and a 1/2 months of mess payments, or a coffee every month).

Please, we cannot keep supporting ICSM without you.

Remember, join at http://icsmalumni.org/join/

And we will keep supporting you now and keep you in touch with the School that helped get you this far.

Smash it today. Black is a great colour anyway, and Black Wednesday is just the start of a new exciting future, for you, us and the NHS.

Alumni AGM- 21/06/2018 6:30pm

This will be in The Reynolds Building in one of the seminar rooms and is open to all members, with committee members asked to attend if at all possible. It will be chaired by AJ, the Association Chair, with myself and Mike Schachter there as the other Trustees. The current ICSM Alumni Officer, James Palmer, will take minutes and reports will be made by the Trustees, ICSMSU President and ICSMSU Clubs and Socs Officers as well as Gazette Editors.

As well as this, one of the Trustees will elect to step down and open their roles for competition for self-nominating members, which said Trustees can also stand for once again. This process is a rolling one, whereby a different Trustee will stand for re-election next year, and the 3rd the year after and so on.

Each year we also invite newly graduating members to join our committee, so please if you are a new member contact us to register your interest and try to attend if you can.

We hope to see a lot of you there.

The hypothetical agenda in short is:

1) Apologies
2) Points from previous minutes
3) Chair's Report
4) Treasurer's Report
5) SU Report
6) Gazette Report
7) Structure of Committee and Trustee/Committee Re-election

If anyone is free today, ICSMBC and their alumni club Phoenix compete in the final day of UH Bumps. All day rowing racing on the river, from Syon Park down to Chiswick Bridge with the bank on the Surrey-side being a good place to support, as is Kew Bridge or UL Boat House.

And Phoenix RACE ICSMBC in the delayed Dr Student Boat Race at 2pm.

And finally the day finishes off with UH Bumps after party, at the UL Boat House, a great place to catch up and have a few drinks.

For email subscribers/official Association Members - your privacy rights and how we collect and use data.

We collect data from you only when you sign up with us or you directly change your details either on our website/via our emails or ask us to by contacting us. We then store this data securely on password protected computers as a stored copy we update regularly, and as our constantly updated list on MailChimp. We used to have a spreadsheet on the Imperial computer accounts for members of the old Alumni set-up but we will have to delete this at the end of the week.

We only store and collect your data with your consent and will use it the ways you say that we can in your preferences in order to contact you with information, news, events, or other things you may need. We will only use data for surveying or research reasons if we tell you expressly that this is what we are doing beforehand (like in a signposted survey). We may, if deemed appropriate send you information from a third party but will never share our information on you with a third party unless we explicitly ask you or are legally required to.

This will continue to be the case, and you always have the right to unsubscribe, alter your preferences or details, or ask us what information we have and how we use it.

Dear all Alumni on the old (with paper sign up) system rather than the new (electronic sign that works much better) system, or not currently getting emails or paying into either system:

Due to the General Data Protection Regulation, we have to re-contact all of our saved members to ask them to select contact preferences and opt in to membership again, even though they are already members. If this isn't done by the end of 25th May (this Friday), we HAVE to delete their contact details and can't contact them again unless they make the first move.

We have no way of getting the old system, which we want to shut down anyway, to opt in again, never mind its many other problems. The new system sign up now automatically asks GDPR compliant questions so signing up and setting up payment on the new system (then deleting the payment into the old account, which only you can do) will automatically count as opting in!

So everyone not on the old system, now is the time you HAVE to sign up to the new one (link below) or your contact (but not payment) data will be lost forever.

No excuses
