Michael really prepared Surendra for life at Cambridge
We were lucky enough to hire a home tutor from Tutors from England for our son who was about to go to Cambridge but had never been to England.

Surendra had passed his entrance exams, but felt utterly unprepared for the new experience of going to Cambridge; he did not know what to expect when he got there. What would the other students be like? What was life at Cambridge like? What was expected of a student at Cambridge? What was social life like at Cambridge University? How would my son fit into English life? All these questions and many others Michael answered for my son. He lived with our family for three months and, of course, it was a learning experience for him too – to find out what life was like living in an Indian family, but the tutor was very sophisticated and ‘a man of the world’. He fitted into our family very well and was frankly a delight.

He did help Surendra with his studies in areas that Surandra thought he was behind in, but I feel that the greatest benefit for Surendra was that he was able to go to Cambridge with more confidence about what to expect when he got there. He taught him how most undergraduates dressed at Cambridge, what they did in their free time, what their relationships with their teachers were and what was expected of Surendra.

Michael taught him all the nuances of living and studying at Cambridge and we are very grateful to him for that. Michael also gave Surendra introductions to some of his friends in England, as Michael thought it very important that Surendra mix with English people and not just people from South Asia. And indeed Surendra went to stay in the vacations with different families whom Michael had introduced him to.

His tutor’s report at the end of his first term at Cambridge read “Surendra has been a great asset to the freshman of his year, as he felt so at home here one would have thought that he had been to an English public school”. Thank you, Tutors from England. SVP

Our son was addicted to video gaming and Adrian cured him in three months
Our 12-year-old son Arun had become addicted to video gaming; it had taken over his life. My husband and I were desperate and didn’t know what to do. He used to get angry when we tried to limit the hours that he spent video gaming and was absolutely uncontrollable when we turned off the internet modem. He even refused to go to school on some days. We tried everything that we could think of. We were at our wits ends.

And then we met some parents who had had the same problem with their son and they had hired a full-time residential tutor from Tutors from England who had completely cured their son’s addiction, so we did the same.

Alistair was a charming young man, but when we first met him we were not sure that he had the strength of character to cure Arun. How could he compete with Warcraft and Roblox? We were completely wrong; in subtle, almost imperceptible ways he got Arun to give up video gaming altogether. We were amazed and eternally grateful; where a succession of expensive therapists had failed, Alistair succeeded.

At first, of course, Arun was hostile to Alistair, but little by little Alistair won Arun’s respect and Arun really took to him. In fact Alistair subtly became Arun’s mentor. In the end there was nothing that Arun would not do for Alistair.

Of course, this could only have been achieved by a full-time residential tutor. Alistair lived with us twenty-four hours a day and so had an enormous influence over Arun. He was with Arun every waking hour.

Alistair started by taking him to amusement parks and did the things that Arun enjoyed and slowly he started taking him on long walks and hikes until his whole days were filled up with physical activities which Arun came to enjoy, leaving him no spare time or energy for video gaming.

Finally, Alistair started tutoring Arun in the school work that he had missed during the years that he had been addicted to video gaming. It was a wonderful transformation for us to watch happen. Alistair was with us for six months and by the time he left Arun was completely cured of his gaming addiction and never played with video games again. He had caught up with his school work and was able to go back to school and rejoin his class with ease. Hoorah for Tutors from England! You have made one family very happy! GM

I was a ‘prized pony’ tutor
One of the problems of being a live-in home tutor is that some families have a tutor simply because they think it is prestigious to do so. One is shown off as a ‘prized pony’ to their friends and peers.

I was hired by such a family who lived in Palm Beach in Florida to tutor their two sons aged 13 and 15. It quickly became apparent that the two boys did not need a tutor; they were both at famous schools in New England and both were doing well there. I had been hired as a trophy tutor.

The parents did not seem to feel that it was their responsibility to bring up their children – previously they had delegated it to nannies and au pairs, but nannies and au pairs did not have the authority of a tutor.

First of all, they expected me to eat with the staff, which consisted of a butler, cook, housekeeper and chauffeur. I pointed out that it was part of the conditions of the job that I eat and live with the family so that I have as much influence as possible over their children. They reluctantly agreed to this. In fact I managed to win them over and we all started to get on very well together.

They want me to go back next year! As neither son really needed any scholastic tutoring, I tried to help them in other ways – improving their tennis, squash and swimming. Through sports they also improved their patience, concentration and restraint. They were very glad to have the time and attention that their parents rarely gave them. It was actually a great pleasure to spend time with the boys as I felt that I had been able to contribute to their becoming the fine young men that they are today. GW

How I gave a 14-year-old boy his confidence back.
I was appointed home tutor to the 14-year-old son of a rich Indian businessman in Bombay during their summer holidays. His son had finished his first year at Eton where he had been teased about being Indian; he had lost his self-confidence and was hating Eton and dreaded going back.

At first Farouk was hostile towards me, but over the two months that I spent with him we grew very close and he came to trust me. I became his mentor.

I started by teaching him all the academic things that he had failed to learn in his first year because of his great unhappiness, but in fact he was a quick learner and a bright boy and this turned out to be the easy part of the assignment.

What happened afterwards was much more important for him; I helped him regain the self-confidence that he had had while he was at prep school in England, which had had a much more friendly environment than the cut and thrust of Eton. I did this by playing squash with him; he had played quite a lot, but was not very good; I considerably improved his game and this gave him back his confidence that he had lost at Eton.

I spent two very happy months with Farouk and his family and he wrote to me after his first week back at Eton, saying that he felt completely different at school; he seemed to have the respect of his fellow pupils and felt happy with them. And his work was no problem. I understand from his father that his housemaster’s report at the end of the term said that he was a ‘changed boy’.

I was a full-time private tutor to a girl who was an equestrian superstar.
Leela was on the Indian equestrian team; she was at university but had no time for her studies; however she had to do them to pass her exams and that was what I was hired for.
It was a very taxing appointment as she was obsessed with riding and wanted to spend every waking hour with her horses at the stables. She was also very competitive and wanted to be first in every riding event. I had to find a way of making her find time for her studies.
At first she resisted studying. She said bluntly that she did not have time to study and didn’t see the point in it. I began by asking her to give me just half an hour a day and she reluctantly agreed to this. During these half hour periods I gradually convinced her to think in depth about her future: did she just want to be an equestrian or did she want to broaden her interests and experiences and even own her own business one day? Slowly she came to see that she needed a degree to diversify her interests and she reluctantly agreed to give more time to her studies.
Half hours became hours and gradually she was willingly spending four hours a day studying with me and enjoying it! I was amazed at how she channelled her determination towards her education as well as her dressage and jumping.
In fact she is very intelligent and she became an exceptionally good student; she had simply duplicated her enthusiasm for riding and applied it to learning. This took some time, but once she had done so she really enjoyed balancing both equally. Passion for horses had taught her a lot about perseverance and commitment to see things through.
It was wonderful to be a residential full-time tutor to somebody who applied such determination to whatever she did and I ended up enjoying my time with her immensely. However there were times in the first days when I thought that I would never get her to leave her horses and study with me sufficiently to assure success in her final exams, but she did and with great success! Tutors from England have had success in helping pupils quit video gaming

During COVID many teenagers were locked up with their families and had a lot of time on their hands. A lot of them turned to video gaming to be with their friends online. Among them were many children who would not normally have been attracted by such games. The result has been agony for many families: teenagers glued to their computers for many hours of the night, too tired to go to school next day. They become very angry if they are forbidden to do it by their parents and the whole atmosphere in the family becomes fraught.
The tutors that Tutors from England sent in such circumstances, as far as the children were concerned, came as tutors to help them with their studies that they got behind with because of their video-gaming. But in fact, unknown to the pupils, they were hired to try to stop them video-gaming.
The tutors started teaching the pupils a few hours a day, but they were not just teachers, they were very fine young people who will go far in life. Soon they became mentors to the children who came admire and trust them. In addition the tutors introduced them to sports – tennis, squash, hiking, swimming, things that the pupils really loved doing – and got them very fit and healthy and never let them get bored or have an idle moment on their hands.
Slowly, little by little, the children came to realise that video gaming was an idiotic occupation and quit it entirely. Never once did the tutor criticize their video-gaming; it was the children on their own who decided to quit and on each occasion they did not revert to gaming. If you have children obsessed with video-gaming, Tutors from England can send tutors who can subtly, successfully dissuade them from wasting their time at it and redirecting their energy into their studies.

A residential tutor’s impact can reach far beyond textbooks and exams.
A residential tutor’s job is to motivate and inspire, not just teach. Teaching is the easy part; inspiring and motivating is the difficult part and it takes a certain type of individual to motivate and inspire. Tutors from England’s residential tutors are such people.

They are all outstanding people, rather than outstanding teachers. They are the type of people who in their daily lives are looked up to by their friends and acquaintances. The type of people who impress when they walk into a room; the type of people who impress at dinner parties; the type of people who stand out in a crowd. The type of people who are born leaders. The type of person you'd love your child to become.

We do not send residential tutors who are just academically competent; we send well- rounded individuals who are many-facetted. Not teachers, but inspirers who live with the family. The sort of people about which our satisfied clients say “Alistair is one of the finest people we have ever met in our life”. They must have the ability to understand everything about children – what motivates them, what influences them, what drives them, not just how to teach them. They have to inspire them so that their pupils want to please them. That is the secret of being a good tutor.

Such has been the success of Tutors from England that, almost inevitably, parents ask for the same tutor to be sent back the second and even third time to tutor their children. And many of our tutors remain friends of the family for life. GN

“Online and hourly tutors were a waste of time for me”.
I was appointed residential tutor to Ajay, a child whose rebellious nature had affected his studies.

It soon became apparent to me that it was not Ajay’s intelligence that was the problem – he is very bright. It was his rebellious attitude.

I discovered that there was virtually a civil war between him and his parents and his way of waging war was to fail in his exams. I had to change Ajay’s character, not his work ethic. I set upon this very surreptitiously at first as I soon discovered that he had had various tutors and online learning previously, all of which had apparently failed, probably because they did not get to the root of the problem. And they couldn't because they didn't spend sufficient time with him to understand the situation.

Over time I managed to persuade Ajay that his parents were not the ogres that he thought they were, but kind, loving people whose sole desire was that Ajay should grow up into a fine, successful young man. It appeared that they had gone about it the wrong way. Ironically, they thought online tutoring would save time, but he really needed the full attention of a residential tutor.

Fortunately, during the three months that I was Ajay’s tutor, his parents had very little to do with him – he was left almost exclusively in my charge, which was very helpful for me, as I was able to work with him without the interference of his parents.

Slowly Ajay came to trust me and be persuaded by me. After about two months, all of which time we spent together, studying a little, but also playing squash, going on long hikes up hills and having fun together, I managed to change Ajay’s attitude towards his parents. Hostilities ceased. Happiness and calm were restored to the family and I understand from speaking to his parents since that Ajay is thriving at school. In fact he is near the top of his class. In short, he is a different boy. KG

- I cured a 14-year-old of his and his father’s temper tantrums -

I was hired by a couple in Manhattan to tutor their 14-year-old son and it was immediately apparent that he had a terrible temper. I quickly discovered that the reason for this was that his father also had a terrible temper and frequently shouted at his son. It was an explosive atmosphere.

I lived with the family and took all my meals with them. Without turning Edward against his father, I slowly showed Edward that his father's behaviour was not only entirely inappropriate, but also not the way that any man should under any circumstances behave to anyone. Edward came to trust me and agree with me about his father's behaviour. Apparently I had become his mentor. From then on he never said anything when his father exploded at him and his father's explosions became fewer and fewer. By the time that I left after three months, Edward was a changed boy; he took his work much more seriously and flourished at school. His temper had been cured.

I was very happy that his parents asked me to go back for three months the following year, as I wanted to make sure that the family relationships had not lapsed into what I had found when I first arrived. His father's temper tantrums at Edward had stopped altogether and became less and less frequent at his wife. Edward was still doing very well at school and he had no need of an academic tutor, but the family seemed to think that it was me who had created the peace that was starting to exist between them all and that I was a good influence to have around the house.

It seemed that I had tutored not only Edward, but his father had changed as well! His mother was very grateful for what I had achieved with the family. It appeared that I had become Edwards life-coach. Apparently I had a profound influence on the whole family! LP
