The European Social Survey is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ESS ERIC) that provides cross-national data about public attitudes and behaviour. Based at City, University of London, ESS is an academically driven survey using the highest methodological standards. Every two years, up to 40,000 face-to-face interviews are conducted across Europe on a wide range of subjects.

Nominations for the Survey Futures Early Career Impact Awards close next week (Thursday 10 September). The award celebrates the contributions of early career researchers working within the survey sector in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧. Researchers working on survey design, delivery, or methods for up to seven years in the UK are eligible for nomination. The Survey Futures project has been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.

Analysis of our Round 9 (2018/19) data was undertaken for research published this summer by Social Justice Research (Springer Nature). Atefeh Bagherianziarat and Dana Hamplová (Akademie věd České republiky 🇨🇿) assessed the relationship between the perceived fairness of income and life satisfaction. “On average, perceived fairness was positively associated with life satisfaction, supporting the hypothesis that individuals who perceive their incomes as fairer report higher well-being.”

Find out more about our self-completion panel survey (CRONOS-3) at a webinar taking place from 2-3.30pm (CEST) on Tuesday 22 September. There will be a focus on the panel design and methodological considerations, accessing data, and how to link responses to the same individual who took part in our main survey. The first five waves of the panel survey included 450 questions that were asked of respondents in 11 countries (2024-25). The event is part of the Infra4NextGen project, funded by EU Science & Innovation 🇪🇺.

The EU Science Hub - Joint Research Centre 🇪🇺 is recruiting a Policy Officer to join the Survey Methods and Analysis Centre (SMAC). The unit contributes to evidence-based policymaking by combining methodological and applied research to support Directorates-General in survey design, implementation, and data analysis. Applicants should therefore have experience in survey design and implementation as well as statistical methods and data analysis. The deadline to apply for the role is on Tuesday 15 September.

Our methods series returns with a session on the integration of generative AI in surveys from 12-1pm (BST) on Tuesday 15 September. Patrick Sturgis (The London School of Economics and Political Science - LSE 🇬🇧) will present two projects that applied generative AI to longstanding challenges in survey methodology: questionnaire pretesting and occupational coding. Both use large language model (LLMs) to simulate cognitive interviewing and automatically assign codes to respondents' descriptions of employment. The LLMs were developed as part of the Survey Futures project, funded by Economic and Social Research Council 🇬🇧.

Analysis of our data was conducted for research recently published by Transfer: European Review of Labour and Research (Sage Publications). Josef Ringqvist (Karlstad University 🇸🇪) examined the relationship between support for taxes on fossil fuels and the European Participation Index (EPI). The EPI (European Trade Union Institute - ETUI 🇧🇪) summarises formal rights and the extent of participation at work in different countries.

Find out more about the ICOS Cities project that developed innovative tools to help cities monitor greenhouse gas emissions in near real time. The measurement networks established in the project helped verify information reported by cities to fulfil their obligations as part of the European Climate Law. During the project, we conduced city-level surveys in Munich 🇩🇪 and Paris 🇫🇷. The project was funded by EU Science & Innovation 🇪🇺 and led by ICOS - Integrated Carbon Observation System.

Research into gender of interviewer effects was published earlier this year by Public Opinion Quarterly (Oxford Academic (Oxford University Press)). Ádám Stefkovics (ELTE Társadalomtudományi Kutatóközpont 🇭🇺) assessed whether respondents to gender questions included in Round 11 (2023/24) of our survey were affected by the gender of the interviewer. Our gender module explored sexist attitudes, gender discrimination, gender equality, and public policies that aim to address gender inequalities.

An article published by The Conversation UK 🇬🇧 earlier this month considered our data to investigate political polarisation. Written by our Director, Professor Rory Fitzgerald, the research examined long-term trends in attitudes towards political orientation, climate change and immigration by age, gender and region.

"Overall, our findings show that Europe’s political polarisation is indeed generational. But rather than being shaped by generation alone, political attitudes in Europe seem to be increasingly shaped by an interacting combination of generation, gender and regional differences."
