๐Ÿ“ When to Start Preparing for the 11 Plus SET Exam?

The Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) is an 11 plus entrance exam required by Sutton grammar schools. All applicants must take the SET to qualify for admission. The test is conducted in September of Year 6.

We often get asked by parents, "When should I start preparing my child for the 11 plus exam?". This is dependant on the child & their abilities, have a look at our suggested guide below:

โ— Year 3: Too Early?

Starting in Year 3 or earlier can risk burnout. However, no learning at all can also be detrimental. Light learning and homework builds a solid foundation. Focus on mental arithmetic and regular reading to develop essential skills. We also recommend fun, engaging weekly tutor sessions!

โ— Year 4: Ideal Time?

Year 4 is often ideal, and what we recommend the majority of the time as it gives children two years to master the syllabus. Introduce key topics in maths, comprehension and creative writing. Regular practice at this age cements understanding and develops speed. At this stage, we recommend 2-3 lessons a week to build a strong foundation!

โ— Year 5: Sufficient?

Starting in Year 5 gives about a year to master necessary skills. This may be enough for some, but not for others. Good reading skills are crucial by this time. At this stage, a MINIMUM of 3 lessons a week is required due to time constraints!

Tips for Building Vocabulary for Students

I get asked by parents regularly, how can their child build on their vocabulary, so here is a list below to help!

1. Book Exploration: Read a variety of books to discover new words and write down ones that are unfamiliar. Reading is an excellent way to expand your vocabulary. (May be worth researching or asking us which books are recommended)

2. Podcasts and Audiobooks: Listen to podcasts and audiobooks to hear new words in context and improve your understanding of their usage.

3. Thesaurus Adventure: Make use of a thesaurus to find synonyms and antonyms for words you already know, enhancing your creativity and language skills.

4. Word Wall Display: Create a visual display of new words you've learned in your study space. Regularly reviewing them will reinforce your vocabulary.

5. Daily Word Challenge: Start your day with a new "Word of the Day." Learn its meaning, synonyms, antonyms and challenge yourself to use it in conversations or in writing.

6. Engaging Games: Have fun while learning with word games like Scrabble or vocabulary-building apps to practise in an interactive way.

7. Journaling Journey: Keep a journal to describe your daily experiences using descriptive language, enriching your vocabulary through real-life observations.

8. Writing Practice: Regularly write in different styles, experimenting with new words and phrases to enhance your creativity and language expression.

9. Newspapers: Read good quality newspapers daily to broaden your linguistic skills.

10. Creative Writing Prompts: Challenge yourself with creative writing prompts to ignite your imagination and explore diverse ways of expressing yourself through words.

11. Vocabulary Quizzes: Test your vocabulary knowledge with quizzes or flashcards to reinforce your learning and retention of new words.

12. Word Association Games: Play word association games with friends or family to boost your vocabulary in a fun and interactive way.

By incorporating these strategies into your preparation, especially for the creative writing exam, you'll not only strengthen your vocabulary but also enhance your writing skills and confidence in crafting compelling stories.

Best of luck!

An example of a Maths question from this years SATS vs a foundation GCSE question.

Can you spot the similarities?

Though the KS2 SATS will be awarded less marks! Mean!

This is why I introduce GCSE material to my KS2 students, if they build that confidence from early on, on how to tackle these kind of questions, they will be able to answer them with ease when at secondary school & doing their exams!
