Design picks of the week 💡

Image 1: To mark the Bayeux Tapestry's return to the British Museum, Mastercard has unveiled its own ten-metre "Payeux Tapestry". With 15 scenes tracing payments history from cowrie shells to contactless, the images were each drawn by a child and then hand-woven by textile artist Mia Hansson over 200 hours. Its final scenes turn to prediction, imagining AI shopping agents, robot grocery runs, and biometric payments by 2030, tied to Mastercard's own research into how agentic commerce could reshape spending by the end of the decade.

Image 2: Danish brand Vipp's 453 Swivel chair pairs modernist style with office comfort, its aluminium frame wrapping fluidly from the arms into a suspended, padded backrest. Built with a four-star base and 360-degree rotation, it's designed to work equally well in conference rooms and home offices, and comes upholstered in black, camel, or green leather, or a Dark Sand textile

Image 3: Ed Sayers, creator of the Straight 8 Filmmaking Competition, has produced Super Nature - a feature-length film shot entirely on Super 8, an unusual feat for a format usually limited to one short cartridge. 40 filmmakers across 25 countries contributed nature footage, which Sayers then edited together digitally into a single story about humanity's connection to the natural world. It's currently on general release in UK and Ireland cinemas.

Design picks of the week 💡

Image 1: Designers Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad and Rafael El Baz salvaged 12 tonnes of clay excavated from HS2's Old Oak Common station to create Sweet Terrain, a collection of wall tiles moulded with traditional Ma'amoul biscuit tools. Made with tilemaker Craven Dunnill Jackfield and inspired by Middle Eastern bakeries in west London, the tiles will bring a hand-dipped, human touch to the station's quiet spaces, like corridors and multi-faith rooms.

Image 2: Macaulay Sinclair has designed Dishoom Leeds around a fictional 1950s Bombay backstory — inspired by the real 1944 docks explosion — and grounded it in research trips to the city's Art Deco buildings. Staircases, bars, and stained glass all echo real architectural details, while 40+ original vintage pieces sourced from Bombay complete the space

Image 3: Maynard Studio has swept away Canterbury's clashing signage in favour of one cohesive system, drawing on the city's gothic arches, stained glass, and medieval typography. Slim aluminium totems and fingerposts now guide visitors through the historic centre, easing crowding at the main landmarks and pointing more people toward hidden gems like Canterbury Castle.

Design picks of the week 💡

Image 1: WER Studio has renovated and rear-extended a Grade II-listed townhouse in Notting Hill, part of an 1840s terrace originally built as single-family homes. At 93m², the project's central challenge was balancing preservation of the home's period character with a modern update for its new family.

Image 2: Founded by Jane Gleeson, Guzzle uses food to explore bigger ideas and bring people together. The Irish magazine's new issue, with a cover by Laura Callaghan, draws contributors from across the global Irish diaspora.

Image 3: Brazil's Estúdio Campana has wrapped a pop-up Tiffany & Co store at São Paulo's JK Iguatemi Mall in an undulating woven wicker skin, rendered in the brand's signature blue with tan accents. The design studio's co-founder, Humberto Campana calls the intimate space a "woven jewellery box" visitors can step inside.

Image 1: The Warehouse Project has launched a new archive dedicated to the people and process behind the venue’s parties. itsnicethat interviewed WHP official photographers Gary Brown, Harriet Bols, Jody Hartley, who talked through their experiences of photographing the ravers at one of the iconic venues in the UK music scene.

Image 2: A crumbling stone cottage in his native Cornwall called artist Danny Fox back from years in Los Angeles. With help from friends and a stock of reclaimed materials, he built himself a home — one shaped by the folk-art objects that have long fed his work.

Image 3: São Paulo illustrator Gabriel Diogo draws the textures of Brazilian football culture — terrace flags, sticker albums, retro kits — rooted in his lifelong devotion to Corinthians. Diogo’s sun-baked, dry-brushed style and faceless characters invite viewers into the scene, reflecting his belief that football is really about family and memory
