In the UK, some recognised music qualifications and graded exams can carry UCAS Tariff points, depending on the qualification and grade. Violin can potentially contribute towards your university application. 🎓

That being said, the benefits of playing violin go way beyond academia.

1. Learning violin shows commitment and perseverance. It takes time and daily practice to improve.

2. It teaches discipline and time management (like when you’re balancing practice with schoolwork).

3. Violin helps the brain develop new neurological pathways, strengthen concentration, pattern recognition, memory and functionality.

4. Playing in an orchestra or ensemble develops your ear - this contributes to note accuracy and teamwork skills.

5. And when it comes to your UCAS personal statement, having a genuine musical interest gives you something interesting to talk about. Music is limitless! We all have our own tastes and styles.

Some of the most committed and gifted students I teach started learning as adults.

Adults ask brilliant questions.
Adults often practise with purpose and enthusiasm.
Adults choose to learn because they want to enjoy their life to the fullest.

Never underestimate what an adult brain can do. It is amazing how neuroplasticity comes into play when you learn a musical instrument.

Your brain can re-wire and develop in amazing ways.
