Spot the error: autoclave edition 👀

This load is ready to go… or is it? Take a closer look at the pouch at the front of the tray.

Answer: The front pouch is packed with too many instruments. Pouches need to be loaded in line with their instructions so the contents can be processed effectively and the pouch can remain intact.

🦷 Two pieces of equipment I wish I saw fewer practices using without checking they’re right for the job. 👇

💨 Air purifiers and “virus killers”
These became popular during COVID and can serve a useful purpose. But their effectiveness depends on suitable technology, enough air-cleaning capacity for the room, correct positioning and maintenance. An undersized or poorly positioned unit may offer less protection than you expect—and it doesn’t replace ventilation.

♨️ Non-vacuum (Type N) autoclaves
These are intended for unwrapped, solid instruments. If your loads contain hollow, wrapped or air-retentive items, a Type N cycle isn’t suitable. A completed cycle alone doesn’t demonstrate that an unsuitable load has been sterilised.

Before investing, check what your practice actually needs and follow both the instrument and equipment manufacturers’ instructions. Buying equipment that can’t do the job can be a costly mistake.

🚨 ANSWERS 🚨

1️⃣ Damaged dental chair upholstery – the rips mean the surface is no longer intact and therefore cannot be effectively cleaned and decontaminated.

2️⃣ No inoculation injury/sharps injury poster displayed – staff should have clear, readily accessible information on what to do following an inoculation injury.

3️⃣ Sharps bin positioning – the sharps container shouldn’t be sitting loose on the work surface; it should be securely positioned using the appropriate bracket/holder.
