Do You Fancy a Brew...

British English isn’t just about vocabulary—it’s about vibe.

In the UK, “Do you fancy a brew?” doesn’t mean you’re being invited to a potion-making class. It just means someone’s offering you a cup of tea.

“Fancy” = feel like / want
And “brew”? That’s a good old British cuppa. ☕

Learning real-life English is about more than textbooks—it’s also about those little things people actually say.

The “S” That Sneaks In...

"Mum, look! I saw two sheeps!"
Five-year-old logic: if one is a sheep, two must be sheeps, right?

This little moment reminded me how often learners struggle with irregular plurals in English. We’ve got:

one sheep ➡ two sheep

one foot ➡ two feet

one mouse ➡ two mice..but one house ➡ definitely not hice ☺️

English is full of patterns—and just as full of exceptions.
Need help making sense of it all? I’ve got you. Message me anytime ☺️

Just under a year ago, 11 months to be exact, I took a break from teaching. All because of Junior. Finally, with a bit of a push (pun intended), he appeared and it’s been a blast watching him grow. And grown he has; walking, kind of talking, in his own little world that only he knows what he’s going to do with that cup, ball and rubber duck (cue facepalm)...

But it’s now time to move away from toddler-speak, start using full sentences again and advance to being a working mum. I thought it’d be fitting to begin with one of the most popular words in my home...’nappy’ (US ‘diaper’). Contrary to what the hubby believes, it is not the sweeter form for ‘nap’ (short sleep). Sure it may look similar to words like ‘birdie’= little bird, or ‘horsey’ = little horse, or ‘donkey’ = little donk...oops...no...not that… Yet it is true that if you want to make a word sweeter, you can put ‘y’ or ‘ie’ at the end of it. Be careful, though, it’s not always possible, just like in the ‘nappy’ example.

Hope you enjoyed this post. If you have any questions about a word or phrase from the post or about anything else, feel free to write to me.

Keep safe!
