This week we are delving into the wonderful world of slime mould.

💧It has no brain.

💧No nervous system.

💧No eyes.

Yet it can solve mazes, remember information and even design transport networks that sometimes outperform those created by human engineers.

This strange yellow blob is actually a giant single cell. Scientists have discovered that it can learn from experience, share information with other slime moulds and build astonishingly efficient networks. In one experiment, slime mould-inspired model designed a subway system that was more resilient to disruption than the real thing.

And the strangest discovery of all?

Its memories may be stored in its body rather than in a brain.

Nature never stops surprising us.

Could this humble woodland blob help inspire the cities, computers and robots of the future?

Could one of the world’s rarest pigeons disappear unnoticed?

Deep in the forests of Timor lives one of the world’s least known pigeons. Most people have never heard of it. Few have ever seen it. Yet scientists now warn that the beautiful Timor green pigeon may be sliding rapidly towards extinction.

The story is deeply worrying because it follows a pattern conservationists know all too well. A species that once seemed secure slowly disappears from parts of its range. Numbers fall quietly. Forests become fragmented. Hunting pressure increases. Sightings become rare. Then suddenly scientists realise there may only be a few hundred animals left.

By that stage, time is dangerously short. The Timor Green Pigeon Could Soon Vanish Forever. History Has Seen This Before.

For us at Rockford’s Rock Opera, the story feels hauntingly familiar. In our story Lost on Infinity, one of the extinct birds living on the Island of Infinity is Iggy, the last passenger pigeon. His species once filled the skies of North America in numbers so vast they were almost beyond imagination. Yet humans drove them to extinction within a few decades.

The Timor green pigeon may now be facing a similar fate.

In Lost on Infinity, the disappearance begins with dogs. When Rockford is accidentally checked into the Fossil Record Office, dogs across Earth begin to vanish. At first, the loss feels personal. Pets disappear, companions vanish, and chaos spreads across the world.

But the real danger is bigger than losing the animals we love.

Extinction is never just about one species. Every creature is connected to something larger. Some pollinate forests. Some control disease. Some shape landscapes or help regulate the oceans. Remove one thread and the system weakens. Remove enough, and the balance that supports life begins to break apart.

That is why protecting nature matters so much. The good news is that ecosystems can recover when species are protected and habitats are restored. We have already seen whales return to some oceans, wolves reshape damaged environments, and endangered species recover when people choose to act.
