At BADA we might have shows and open days where we prepare for hours, where family and loved ones come to watch, and that we post on our feeds. But the real magic at BADA happens in the in between moments, the journey, the learning, and the stories we make in the hallway and rehearsal rooms. ❤️⭐️🥹

We can’t believe Spring ‘26 has gone by so quick

Recently, we marked the first year of our BADA Studio with another set of events in New York City!⁣

Award-winning playwright Mark Rosenblatt, whose play “Giant” recently transferred from the West End and opened on Broadway, joined ⁣Dean Ben Naylor for a Q&A about both the process of writing a play like “Giant” and tackled some specific topics in the play, leading to a larger discussion about art and the artist and the complexities of every human being. One of the threads that ran throughout was allowing the audience to think, to come up with their own opinions, not just about Dahl but about all of the characters around him. Each character has to be flawed and complex, not just the lead role. By building out this world and these characters, we see more of real life in this play rather than ‘a lesson’ that the playwright wants to teach. (Photos: 1 - 5)⁣

A group of Q&A participants attended a performance of “Giant” on Broadway in advance of the session with Mark. (Photo 6)⁣

Alumni, supporters, and friends joined the Dean, Managing Director Lar’s Franke, and members of the BADA team for a Studio Social to celebrate. (Photos 7 - 8)⁣

Thank you to everyone who took part in these events and particularly to .rosenblatt for joining us for the Q&A, , and to and for hosting us for these events!⁣

Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks as we’re in the process of planning more BADA Studio events and we’re hoping to do one every two months. Whether it’s NYC or LA or Chicago or Atlanta or Philadelphia or Virtual. Whether you attended 40 years ago or are about to, the BADA Studio has something for everyone!

Reminiscing on the phenomenal theatre industry professionals that graced our students with masterclasses this semester !! 🤩💫⭐️

The wonderful , who’s currently performing in the Old Vic’s Arcadia, spoke to our students on his career change into acting, the difference between directing and acting roles, and life when performing.
Our lovely faculty talked to pessiedu ,who’s currently performing in All My Sons on the West End, about training, his journey between stage and screen, as well as one’s role in the industry.

Mark Bell, award-winning director, led a comedy workshop during their masterclass — showing our students the practices and techniques he uses to guide his casts through shows!

The amazing (MIO’18), currently performing in DEEP AZURE at the Globe, with director of DEEP AZURE and former BADA production director talked about adapting Chadwick Boseman’s (MIO’98) play; from his use of verse, to understanding Howard University, and the themes of grief that Deep Azure touches on.

and Agnes O’Casey, who are performing together in The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, had a wonderful masterclass workshop and Q&A with our students, showing them techniques and practice they bring to their own work!

We can’t thank these amazing theatre professionals enough for all the advice, experience, and learning they brought to BADA this semester 🫂❤️👏

Everyone at BADA was deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of George Hall, long-time Governor and Faculty member. Former BADA Midsummer in Oxford Faculty member and BADA friend and advocate, Linda Gates, shares some memories of George and his ongoing impact on actor training.⁣

—⁣

George Hall and BADA⁣

George Hall joined the faculty at the BADA Midsummer in Oxford program when it first began under the direction of Tony Branch and Carolyn Sands in 1984 at Balliol College, Oxford. At that time George was also director of the acting course at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (Central) in London and afterwars taught at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Shortly afterwards he joined the faculty at the Royal Academy of Music where he was a member of its Musical Theatre department, teaching his last class on Zoom shortly before his death at age 101. George was also the only British members of the faculty of the International Cabaret Conference at Yale University where he taught with a cohort of American music theatre professionals every summer for many years.⁣

I first met George in 1974 when he was the Guest Speaker at the American Theatre Conference in Washington DC. I’ll never forget his wonderful speech about ‘what was right’ about the American theater in which he encouraged American acting programs to embrace our unique theatre art form - the musical theatre. At that time it wasn’t taught in many top drama schools, and we were forbidden to do musicals when I was at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon). Under George Hall’s direction Central was one of the first British drama schools to introduce singing as part of the program for all the students...⁣

SHAKESPEARE W/ SCOTT ! 🎭📚🫶

Scott Handy is teaching Shakespeare to our Globe cohort this semester and we want to share a sneak peek into the lovely learning that’s been going on 🤭🥳⭐️

Scott teaches Shakespeare from text to speech guiding our students through techniques and practice that allow them to fully understand Bard’s words. Scott helps the students dive deep into the meaning, pathos, and nuance of different scenes, helping them progress their memorisation and performance through understanding.

👏👏👏

Amazing performances by our Globe cohort as well!!

Follow along for more BADA LTP content as— wait for it— we’re almost at the end of our teaching block 🤩🤓 !!
