Team news at the School of Social Justice:

I’m thrilled to welcome Hannah Joy Sachs as our new Director of Learning.

Hannah will lead our work with clients to design and deliver transformative learning and development experiences for their teams, communities, and audiences. She brings with her a wealth of experience in educational programme design, facilitation, and international leadership.

I first met Hannah through the Humanity in Action programme, where she co-led the Democracy Fellowship. That experience, meeting community leaders from around the world in Berlin and Kraków, was shaped by her thoughtful leadership and ability to bring together people with different perspectives to work on some of the toughest issues facing our societies today.

I deeply respect Hannah’s ability to:
- Create environments where diverse voices can be heard,
- Lead complex educational programmes,
- Problem-solve with clarity and calmness,
- And bring joy and purpose to the work.

She is going to be amazing to work with as we build the School of Social Justice into a partner for organisations who want to support their communities’ learning and development ambitions, and train the next generation of changemakers and leaders.

Mark Carney just won the Canada elections. I met him ten years ago at The Mansion House during the 2015 Conference for Inclusive Capitalism. We took this photo together—and I left that encounter with two lessons that have stuck with me ever since:

1. Leadership is earned.
Carney has spent years leading some of the world’s most influential institutions—recruiting and managing teams, serving as a spokesperson, handling economic and political crises. His rise to the top wasn’t an accident. It’s been a life-long interview for a job like the one he now holds: leader of 41.5 million people, a top-10 global economy, and a country rich in natural resources. His calm, capable, and charismatic leadership has been forged over years of deliberate service.

2. Travel, learning, and working abroad can be a route to leadership.
He studied at Harvard for undergrad, did his postgrad at Oxford, and worked across Boston, London, New York, and Tokyo. From 2013 to 2020, he served as the Governor of the Bank of England—the first non-Briton to ever hold that post since the Bank was founded in 1694. That showed me something powerful: it’s possible to lead a national institution even when you’re the outsider. Even when you’re the so-called “alien.”

Now, as the Canadian Prime Minister, he has the task of bringing together a divided nation, navigating Canada’s relationship with Trump-era America, and managing the international trade and tariffs debacle. As someone who’s long witnessed Canada as a refuge—a place that welcomes migrants and refugees—I hope it holds firm to that tradition, especially as its neighbour heads in the opposite direction.

Let’s see how he leads.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Emmeline Pankhurst, and José Rizal all had to learn, work smart, and carve out time to develop themselves. They sought teachers to show them how to deliver a speech, organise actions, and write to envision better tomorrows.

We believe anybody can learn how to achieve progress. That is why, today, we are launching ten new masterclasses where you will learn skills you need to practically change the world.

Each masterclass is 90-minutes, and includes insights, exercises, and time for Q&A. My mission is to equip you with the skills, tools, strategies, and tactics needed to tackle social injustice. My hope is that with these live online lessons, you will be able to grow as a leader, and go on to address the problems of our time.

Our first masterclass on public speaking is between 11am and 12.30pm BST on Saturday 21st September.

ANNOUNCEMENT - New masterclass: How to be a brilliant public speaker

To achieve change, we must be able to communicate brilliantly. Think about the great leaders in human history: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. used the power of oratory to paint a vision of a better world, which created a pathway for change. Lee Kuan Yew used his passionate voice to build a small nation to a leading nation.

Public speaking is important. That is why I am launching a new masterclass, where you will learn how to prepare to give a talk to the public, and how to deliver the talk.

There are two types of obstacles to top level public speaking: First, the practical: space to think, ability to write, and time to practice. Second, the psychological: fear, resting on your laurels, and a belief of not being good enough.

To overcome these obstacles, we need a framework, and a set of tips to guide us. This is what I will provide you.

My name is Alvin Carpio, and I run the School of Social Justice. I joined my first protest two-decades ago: I was sixteen years old, and campaigned against the war. It was then that I gave my first speech arguing for peace. Since then, I have given hundreds of speeches, at events and places like the UK Houses of Parliament, University of Cambridge, Web Summit, TEDx, Eton College, and the European Parliament, calling for social change.

In this time, I have received rapturous applause, and I have also flopped. I’ve gone through the ups and downs, and have learned what works, what doesn’t. What I know is that public speaking has the potential to move people.

My job is to share lessons with people who aspire to make a difference. This is why I’m delivering this course: To equip you with the skills you need to address the injustices of our time.

Then we put up the Lady Justice signal.

Our team is now reviewing the nominations. In September, we will publicly announce the scholars who will receive training scholarships.

In times of darkness, we need light. We need torchbearers to lead the way. And we need to support each other in whatever way we can. That is why our team at the School of Social Justice is trying to play our part: we will train those who want want to make a difference, and want to learn how.
