UCA is delighted to announce that it is the top specialist art and design university for world-leading research outputs in the UK, according to REF 2021.
Significant improvements in UCA’s overall quality profile and quality profile for research outputs have cemented its place at the forefront of creative research.
REF 2021 has shown that almost a third of UCA’s research outputs are world-leading, and more than three quarters are either world-leading or internationally excellent.
President and Vice-Chancellor Bashir Makhoul comments “The global position of UCA continues to strengthen and the results of REF 2021 show just this. As the top specialist art and design university for world leading research outputs I am delighted that we are recognised for raising our profile as an authority on specialist subjects, such as sustainability in design, the circular economy, photography, crafts, conceptual art, textiles and more.”

Students from UCA Canterbury have planted 60 trees, including birch and rowan, as part of the initiative by Students For Trees and the Woodland Trust 🌳
The campaign aims to plant 50 million trees in the UK by the end of 2025 in a bid to combat the climate crisis.
Gateway Adviser and event organiser, Louise Lees, added: “This initiative will enhance the biodiversity of our Canterbury campus and make it a greener and more pleasant place to be.”

Leading the way in sustainable research: is the second-largest sport worldwide, and the lack of transparency around the sustainability of cricket equipment is the focus of a new study by our Centre for Sustainable Design.
According to the International Cricket Council in 2018, more than three million people play cricket worldwide. And, with modern innovations in the game, such as the introduction of The Hundred and Twenty20 Internationals, more and more people, especially younger players and female players, are engaged in the sport.
But cricket is one of the most equipment-intensive sectors, with around 40 pieces of equipment used at one time. It begs the question: What happens to all that cricket gear, and does it just end up in landfill?

UCA research students, graduates and doctoral alumni have taken part in a textiles research trip and exhibition alongside Japanese counterparts on both sides of the globe.
The purpose of the visit was to learn about techniques and culture, and then replicate those influences in the artists’ own work, while for Japanese participants their work encapsulated UK influences.
Two exhibitions then took place – split between the Crafts Study Centre, Farnham, and at Gallery Kyoto, which runs until May 8.

Body Vessel Clay, featuring the work of UCA Chancellor Professor Magdalene Odundo DBE, remains open at the beautiful Two Temple Place gallery until 24 April.
The exhibition explores how ceramics have been disrupted, questioned, and reimagined by black women over the last 70 years. It brings together more than 80 works by eight artists - Ladi Kwali, Phoebe Collings-James, Shawanda Corbett, Jade Montserrat, Julia Phillips, Chinasa Vivian Ezugha, Bisila Noha and Dame Magdalene Odundo- who are working with clay in radical new ways.

A project by Dr Julie Blanchard-Emmerson, a Senior Lecturer in Fashion History and Theory at UCA, has won the 2022 PRME UK & Ireland Chapter Research Seed Funding Competition.
Dr Blanchard-Emmerson’s proposal “‘Do in the education of fashion business students?” was commended by the judging panel.
"Through dialogue, racialised minority students will be able to challenge how they may be stereotyped and under-represented, while white students will be encouraged to question their privilege and provide allyship to colleagues from minority backgrounds, explained Dr Blanchard-Emmerson."

Prof. Charter said: “With the growing concern over plastics in the oceans and the problem of waste and end-of-life fishing gear, this steering group will provide expert advice to government. I will bring my knowledge of circular business models and circular design, local innovation systems, recycling, and the policy context.”

Amazing news! Jana Griffiths, a second-year Ceramics & Glass student, has won Grand First Prize and £1,000 at this year's British Art Medal Society (BAMS) Student Medal Project, run by the Worshipful Company of Founders.
Congratulations Jana! 🥳
The Student Medal Project, now in its 29th year, had 148 submissions from colleges and universities from around the UK and from Pforzheim in Germany, the invited European university for 2022.
Jana’s medal will go on display alongside other prize-winning art medals made by students at Farnham’s New Ashgate Gallery from 12 March until 23 April 2022.
