We are delighted to announce two new Honorary Fellowships. This is the second time that West Dean College of Arts and Conservation has awarded Fellowships.
The Fellows, Lesley Millar MBE and Mark Roberts have long associations with West Dean College and have been influential in supporting the development of the College’s specialisms alongside making significant contributions to their fields. The Fellowships recognise this history as well as providing the basis for future collaborations.
Lesley Millar, Professor of Textile Culture, Director of the International Textile Research Centre at UCA, ran her own weave studio for over 20 years before becoming an exhibition curator specialising in textiles.
Mark Roberts began excavating on archaeological sites in 1978, over the next five years he worked on sites in Sussex, Essex and the Isle of Man, supervising excavations from 1980. He has been a tutor at UCL Institute of Archaeology since 1985.

This week we are looking back over 10 years of R&A. Today we're looking at one of the many workshops we've run. Between 2016 - 19 we visited UCA Farnham working with Rebecca Anne Skeels who at the time was the coordinator for the multi disipline MA Students. We ran 4 two day film making workshops in that time getting the group of students to make a 1 minute film in our style of their practice. I think we had all the photography departments SLR cameras booked out and the students paired up and were sent on there way to capture material. Arron and I waited in the computer room until phones calls came in asking for help and we'd have to negociate the maze like campus to find the students. Day one was capturing the footage and at the end of the day we'd go back to our Premier Inn or Air BnB (we found a nice converted garage a couple of times and were distracted by Deep Fry Masters on Netflix one year 😂) and our task would be to build all the footage ready for the students to edit the next day, they were late nights! The second day would be to get the students to then edit the footage and record an interview. The computer room was hot, stuffy and frantick those days. Those that followed the instructions definately had easier days. Each time we would end up with 20 or more films which were totally watchable and it definately made them think about their work in a different way and how to communicate their story better. The film below was made by Hannah Gibson Glass in 2017, she is now one of our best buds and is a regular at our Craft Coffee Morning calls. We really enjoyed running these workshops and working with Rebecca, long and tiring days but so rewarding! Hopefully one day we'll be able to do something similar again.
