We've worked with hundreds of families over the years, both in a tutoring capacity for the children and as consultants to the parents.
We've listed here answers to some of the questions we get asked regularly. There's much confusion over which exam board to prepare for, which subjects will be examined, and which schools use second-stage testing.
Suffice to say, you have to check! Read the small print of Admissions Policies and contact each of your chosen schools and ask them about their admissions process - don't assume that they will all be the same. They won't!
Sometimes it's a case of just not knowing what you don't know.

It can be confusing! You hear about the 11+ and understandably assume it's one single exam.
Not quite...
Private and grammar schools set different exams.
To make the process a bit more complicated, each school will use an exam selected from a range of options.
They will also vary in the subjects they test.
And to make it even more complicated, some will have a second stage exam for the children who passed the first! Not the most straightforward system!
So, it's up to you, as parents, to find out exactly which exam your chosen schools will be using. They are all slightly different, and your child will need to prepare accordingly.
Unfortunately, they will only be able to sit each exam once, but for some exams, such as the ISEB Pre-Test, results of the one test are shared with the other schools you have applied to that also use this test.
It's a bit of a minefield!

Children need to relax over the summer. After a busy year, learning so many new skills, it's crucial for consolidation that they rest, play and have fun over the break. Equally important, though, is making sure that they don't lose those amazing skills they've worked hard to build over the year.
It's so easily done! It's like an enormous exhale once the term finishes, with children switching off and forgetting about school until September. And who could blame them?
However, switching off completely, especially for such a long period, can undermine all their hard work. If they're not practising their skills, they will lose them.
Try to set aside 20/30 mins a day over the holidays to practice with your child; active reading, tricky maths topics. Keep it varied and interesting - little and often is the key.
However, if you think that your child would benefit from some tutoring over the summer, we still have a few spaces left on our online summer courses in Maths, English Comprehension and English Creative Writing.

It's known as 'learning loss' or the 'summer slide'.
Our children have worked so hard over the past few years to build the skills they will need to succeed in the grammar or private school exams.
The problem is, if those skills are not regularly practised, they will be lost.
The long summer break is exactly when this tends to happen, and with the grammar school exams taking place right after the holidays in September, this is the worst time for learning loss.
We have created these summer courses to avoid this. Just a little practice each day will keep your child's hard-earned skills sharp, ready to take on the exams with confidence.
All courses are online and in groups of no more than 10 children. Recordings will be made available after each session to help with revision.

Today is the day!
I've just arrived at the Futures Forum at North London Collegiate School!
BFF brings together the whole international student recruitment ecosystem and that breadth is what makes the conversation so valuable. You hear perspectives you don't normally get to engage with.
This year's focus is Success Outcomes: what success should actually look like for the child, the family, the school and every part of the ecosystem around them.
Thoughtful, practical and honest. Exactly what the sector needs more of.

👉 If you're worried that your child might switch off a bit too much over the Summer holidays, these week-long courses - just 1:5hrs each morning - are a great way for your child to keep a strong hold on their learning over the long break.
🌞 For many children, learning can become a bit fuzzy over the Summer; they've put in so much hard work over the year and then suddenly it all just stops! And for such prolonged period of time!
With the grammar school exams taking place in September, this is the worst time to lose momentum. Even if your child is not sitting these exams, the loss of learning over the Summer could make the start of Year 6 harder than it needs to be.
This is exactly why we have created these courses, to combat 'Summer learning loss'.
📚 We've designed the 11+ Summer Courses to fit in with your holiday plans and, with each course running on different weeks, you can book on 1, 2 or all 3 of the courses.
✔Just an hour and half each morning (each course runs for 5 days) means that learning is ticked off your list, your child's confidence and abilities are kept in tip top condition and they have the rest of the day to relax and enjoy the Summer.
💪 And, of course, they'll be prepared for the exams in September.

Not the faceless online platform.
Not the one-size-fits-all app.
Not the subscription you forget you're paying for.
But the tutor who knows your child.
The specialist who loses sleep over your child's progress.
The expert who genuinely celebrates every breakthrough.
Small businesses don't just provide a service.
They build relationships. They invest in outcomes. They care.

It's so important for us that our pupils connect with our tutors.
In order for a child to really thrive and feel confident in a subject, they need to have a good rapport with the person teaching them; they need to feel comfortable asking questions, know that they can get things wrong without feeling silly, without being judged.
At Confident Learners, we believe that the core to successful learning is having the confidence to give it a go - try your best. Get it wrong. Learn from it. And our tutors will be there every step of the way, guiding, encouraging and celebrating success.
