Introducing our first maker showcase... ...
About the Maker
Matthew Whyte is a designer-maker based in
south-east London. He started woodworking in 2021 after discovering HG Woodworks and has since become passionate about creating furniture that explores pattern, colour, and material. He has developed his skills and personal style within the workshop’s supportive learning environment.
Previous projects include distinctive bedside cabinets with patterned plywood detailing and coffee tables that combine hardwood with patterned accents in birch plywood and reclaimed oak parquet.
Matthew draws inspiration from modernist designers including Jean Prouvé, Alvar Aalto, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
Building on this foundation, his current work emerges from ongoing experimentation with colour and pattern, combining plywood and valchromat to create colourful, playful accent furniture.

Woodland Heritage's Open Days: Gill and I visited John Makepeace's home. Such a privilege to hear a visionary maker talk about his career and work. Such remarkable drive and vision for ecology, architecture, design and craft.... My mum wanted me to go on a course with him 40 years ago - bit late on that one...

So we're just back from a holiday in North Yorkshire, Gayle Sawmill is historic, waterpowered, fascinating - and a bit scary tbh!!! Well worth a visit. Shout out to the volunteers there, they are doing a brilliant job. Thank you!
