This morning's Wordier post run is a fun one! Among today's orders: one for a parent in Florida, another for a bona fide British soap legend 👀

Last month, I posted a set of flashcards to a prison learning centre.

I originally created the Wordier products to support my local 11+ students. Five years later, it's incredible to have helped children and adults all over the world, from the U.S. to Australia. 🌏

FREE Vocab Taster Class this Friday at 4:30 pm with our founder, Kamilah

This Friday, we'll explore how root words and suffixes fit together, giving children a simple, satisfying way to decode new words rather than guess them.

With a few carefully chosen techniques, words like rectify and clarify will stop sounding like "grown-up words" and start popping up naturally in your child's vocabulary.

A little pinch-me moment…

I had the pleasure of joining on her podcast to talk about home education, building vocabulary, and how Wordier began.

It’s a wide-ranging episode — from special educational needs to (my favourite topic) how children really pick up new words.

Whether you’re homeschooling or simply looking to better support your child at home, there’s plenty of food for thought.

You can listen via the link in our bio 🎙️

We asked our students, "How do Wordier classes make you feel?"

Here are a few of the responses.

Did you know the answer to the million pound question? 💷

Our clever Wordies will have known which word it wasn’t.

The origin of “pandemonium” is one of the fun facts in our Order and Chaos lesson (Module 6).

The prefix “pan-“ comes from the Greek for “all” and the base word is “demon”, so it literally means “all demons”.💡

Learning word lists is boring. My pupils absolutely hated going through them.

When my students complained about them, I’d feel awful as I could see that learning word lists wasn’t even that effective.

I wanted to give my pupils a better way to learn vocabulary. That’s why I created the Wordier system.

💫 With the Wordier system, we’re not just learning words one by one.

We’re exploring the links between words so that children can remember what they’ve learnt and easily decode totally new words in future.

The system works so well that I’ve inadvertently created hundreds of little vocabulary monsters with voracious appetites for new words. 👾

My little Wordies are constantly asking questions about vocabulary outside of our vocabulary lessons.

They ask questions like:

❓“Do erase and raze have the same Latin root?” (They do. It means ‘destroy’.)

❓“Is ‘crease’ a Latin root and, if so, how does it relate to decrease?” (It isn’t and it doesn’t but I appreciated the question)

🙋 And they give little factoids like: “Amiable and amicable come from the same Latin root, which means ‘friend’. You can remember it because ‘amigo’ means ‘friend’ in Spanish.” (That’s true, by the way.)

At Wordier, we tap into a child’s natural curiosity to create language roots that will last way beyond the 11+, setting your child up perfectly for secondary school and beyond.

Did you catch us in this week? Our founder was talking all things 11+ and why your child doesn’t have to do 12-hour study days to excel.

When children are young, we give them lots of clues to figure out the meanings of new words. We point at things, repeat words slowly for them, read picture books and explain the differences between words.

At some point, usually when children start to read independently, we stop all of that and just expect them to pick up new words with none of the clues they had before.

But why?

It’s not just little children that need clues to understand words. Big children and even adults need those clues, too.

Of course your child will pick up some words through reading but they won’t pick up enough to get them through the 11+. For that, you’ll need a solid vocabulary strategy.

Luckily, you don’t need to trawl through and decipher decades of research to put together a strategy. we’ve done all of that hard work for you. All you need to do is use tools we’ve created off the back of that research:

🃏 For pure fun and games, we created the FISH! Synonym Game which uses repetition to teach your child while they play - https://link.wordier.online/fish

🗃️ For an easy, on-the-go solution, we created illustrated vocabulary flashcards. The pictures help your child to whizz through vocab like never before - https://link.wordier.online/flashcards

📖 For Year 5 students who need a systematic, little-and-often approach, we’d recommend the workbook. It teaches children how to decode words and tests their knowledge with cloze tests and a variety of challenging activities - https://link.wordier.online/workbook

👩‍🏫 Finally, for an intensive, all-in-one solution, we’d recommend our weekly vocabulary course. With live teaching and a plethora of revision resources, your child will have words explained clearly and get feedback on the sentences they create - https://link.wordier.online/ondemand
