Understanding emotions is an important part of growing up.

This week in our Preschool room, the children explored The Colour Monster Goes to School, using the different Colour Monsters to talk about feelings, emotions and how others might be feeling.

Together, the children discussed what each colour represented, shared their own ideas and explored ways they could help a friend who might be feeling sad, worried, angry or nervous.

Activities like this help children develop emotional awareness, communication skills and empathy, supporting them to build positive relationships and understand the feelings of others.

At Monkey Puzzle Streatham Common, we believe these early conversations play an important role in helping children grow in confidence, kindness and respect for those around them.

“Can I do it myself?”

Our Nursery Manager, Lauren, believes those five words are often a sign that your child is ready to learn something new.

Whether it’s helping in the kitchen, putting on their own coat or showing signs they’re ready for more independence with toileting, giving children the opportunity to try can do wonders for their confidence.

Lauren’s other top tip? Swap some screen time for story time.

Reading together helps develop language, imagination and a love of learning that can last a lifetime.

At Monkey Puzzle Streatham Common, our G.R.A.I.N.S values help us nurture confident, independent children and it’s even more powerful when nursery and home work together. 💛

These are the conversations we have with parents every day.

Inspired by The Colour Monster Goes to School, we explored our new nursery garden through the Colour Monster’s eyes and discovered how each area made him feel.

From investigating nature and getting creative outdoors to finding spaces to play, imagine and grow, every corner of our garden offers children opportunities to learn through exploration and adventure.

We can’t wait to see the emotions, discoveries and memories our children create here every day at Monkey Puzzle Streatham Common.

Which area do you think Colour Monster enjoyed most? 💚🧡❤️💛

What does a typical day in our nursery kitchen look like?

While Healthy Eating Week shines a spotlight on nutrition, helping children develop positive relationships with food is something we focus on every day at Monkey Puzzle Streatham Common.

Our dedicated kitchen team prepares a wide range of meals and snacks on site, giving children opportunities to explore different flavours and textures as they grow.

We know that trying a new food can be a big step for young children. Through positive mealtime experiences, encouragement and repeated exposure to different foods, we help children build confidence, curiosity and independence around food - reflecting our G.R.A.I.N.S values every day.

Because healthy eating isn’t just about what’s on the plate. It’s about creating positive habits and experiences that can last a lifetime. 💛

Happy World Ocean Day! 🐠

Today, our children explored the wonders of the ocean through a variety of hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity, imagination and learning.

Across the nursery, children enjoyed investigating sea creatures, exploring sensory materials, singing ocean-themed songs, creating artwork and talking about the animals and habitats that make our oceans so special.

Through activities like these, children begin to develop an understanding of the world around them, ask questions, make connections and build confidence through play and exploration.

At Monkey Puzzle Streatham Common, we believe some of the most valuable learning starts with curiosity and a chance to discover something new 💛

Last week, our children enjoyed a wonderful visit from Mangotree Kids and The Jolly Djembe Club, bringing together music, storytelling, culture and exploration in a truly memorable experience.

From listening to African stories and discovering books that celebrate diversity, to exploring different cultural artefacts and joining in with drumming and rhythm activities, the children were encouraged to learn about the world around them through curiosity and play.

These experiences help children develop confidence, communication skills, respect for others and an understanding that every person, family and culture has a story worth celebrating.

At Monkey Puzzle Streatham Common, creating opportunities for children to explore different cultures and perspectives is an important part of how we live our G.R.A.I.N.S values, particularly Respect, Aspiration and Growth Mindset.

A huge thank you to Catherine and the Mangotree Kids team for inspiring such thoughtful conversations, joyful learning and lots of drumming fun 💛
