Reviewer #2 is a meme, of course, and at least partly a fiction, but it nevertheless reflects the real dark side of the unfair standards, cultures of bitterness, and bullying that exist in academia. These problem reviewers are a real phenomenon worthy of investigation.

We recently had the pleasure of working with the wonderful Professor Elizabeth Macauley on her new book with Cambridge University Press. An outstanding archaeologist and architectural historian at CUNY, her work explores the rich intersections between antiquity and modernity.

In this guest blog, Kathleen Murphy-Hollies reflects on her experience of completing a PhD-by-papers, a thesis composed of thematically linked academic papers rather than a traditional thesis. She discusses the advantages of this format, including early publishing opportunities, greater thematic flexibility, and a realistic preview of academic life.
