It might sound silly but practicing the journey into school a couple of times can really help with those first day nerves.

In fact, preparing your child for the commute to their new school can help them to feel calmer and more confident.

If they need to take a bus or train, encourage them to check the timetables so they know what time they need to leave the house on school mornings.

If they’re walking in, make sure they know the way and see if they can meet with friends along the route, so they don’t have to walk in alone. This could be especially useful on the dark winter evenings and mornings.

Many pupils get dropped to school by a family member, so it may help to check if there's a car park at school. If not, take a look at parking restrictions on nearby side roads so you can find somewhere safe to drop them off.

Every child is an individual, with their own unique way of learning.

Some children find school maths lessons too challenging, and they get anxious. Other children find that maths lessons don't challenge them enough, so they get bored.

Either way the results are the same - the child eventually disengages.

“My daughter enjoys her maths lessons with George and I love hearing 'Yes!' in the background when she solves a maths problem. The 11+ period was tough for someone who has not had schooling/lessons for over a year and she did extremely well in her maths examination and made the cut for 5 schools in London, including City of London and Francis Holland School: Regent's Park.
