Deadlines, money, lectures, friends, actually having a life AND somehow finding time to rest. How are we supposed to balance all of it?

Cathy Freeman’s green and silver hooded suit became one of the defining images of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

But the suit wasn’t just designed to look good.

Its full body design was developed with aerodynamics and performance in mind, reducing the amount of loose fabric and hair exposed to airflow as an athlete moves at speed.

Now, more than two decades later, Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson has brought the idea back. 👀

At Athlos London, Keely debuted a custom black Nike speedsuit developed with the brand’s innovation team.

The project took around a year, combining fashion, speed and science using newer materials and technology. Keely said the design took inspiration from athletes including Cathy Freeman, but was updated using what we now know about performance.

And yes, apparently the engineers wanted the ponytail tucked away too.

Keely said testing suggested leaving her hair exposed would create additional air drag.

Her response?

The hair was non negotiable. 😂

She went on to win the 800m.

💭 Why it matters

Sportswear is engineering.

What looks like an outfit can involve aerodynamics, material science, biomechanics and countless rounds of testing to find tiny improvements in an athlete’s performance.

And we love that one of the most recognisable examples of this technology was worn by an Indigenous woman more than 25 years ago.

Cathy Freeman’s suit became iconic because of the woman wearing it.

Now its influence is helping inspire what the next generation of performance clothing could look like. 🏃🏾‍♀️⚙️

From flavour and aroma molecules moving through the dish to what happens when you heat it back up, there’s a whole lot of science happening before that first bite.

So is next-day jollof scientifically better? We investigated. 😂

She studied Law to become a solicitor. Then a 13 week coding bootcamp changed the plan. 💗

Daniella Polor had spent years thinking some of her interests simply did not belong together. Literature or maths. Law or tech. Beauty or being taken seriously in technical spaces.

Now she’s a Software Engineer working across cloud, infrastructure and platform engineering, and she’s stopped trying to choose.

In Pretty Smart Issue 032, Daniella talks about swapping Law for code, the Elle Woods effect, walking into technical spaces with a fabulous blowout, pink laptop and full face of makeup, and why she refuses to make productivity her entire identity.

And next? She wants to build a med spa that brings beauty, business and technology together. Because apparently the answer was never picking one box.

“My femininity and technical ability don’t compete with each other, they coexist well.”

What happens when the health conversations you need simply aren’t happening? 💗

For Louise-Mary Amoah, that silence became curiosity.

Growing up, conversations about the body, illness and medicine could feel hushed, and she rarely saw people who looked like her leading them. Rather than turning her away from healthcare, it made her want to understand more and, eventually, become someone who could make that knowledge easier for others to access.

Now a third-year medical student at King’s College London, Louise-Mary’s ambitions go beyond becoming a doctor.

In Pretty Smart Issue 031, we talk about being a first-generation medical student, finding your way into unfamiliar spaces, advocacy and why making health information accessible can start with something as simple as being willing to have the conversation.
